Mugen’s Ultimate Civic comes to UK; £38,599
After huge interest from the UK and overseas, Mugen has announced it will hand-build up to 20 of its road-legal race cars. The famous tuner of Honda engines will produce the cars at its Northampton base, where customers will meet the Mugen engineers and customise their car to suit their personal needs.
As engine tuning is Mugen’s speciality you would also expect a special engine too. And there is one. A 2 litre i-VTEC engine with new camshafts and a modified intake system to give a power increase of 20% to 236bhp and a 10% boost to torque. The extra power is put onto the road with a limited slip diff, and the handling has also been revised with new springs and a completely new set-up.
The car is also being offered with a ‘Track Pack’ which includes front Recaro seats, removal of the rear seat bench, road-legal track tyres, water and oil gauges and data recording equipment.
Mugen has set the price of the Civic Type R at £38,599 and insists this price includes an ‘unparalleled purchasing experience’ where the package will be tailored to the individual customers, supposedly similar to a race car build. Mugen will also paint every car in Honda’s championship white, as a celebration of Honda and Mugen’s racing history.
‘When we launched the Civic Type RR saloon in Japan, we sold out of all 300 units in just six minutes,’ says Hiroki Toyoda VP, of Mugen Euro.

Nothing wrong with a 'civic' if it can put your *** to shame around the corners. It's not the same Civic grocery getter like the one your grandma has. It's a limited edition car and people are willing to pay the price for one, after all, 300 were sold within 6 minutes.

And the Civic in itself is a solid car.....but these performance upgrades just extend it further

To compare UK prices, you can get a WRX STi for 30K pounds in the UK. For 38K pounds, you can get yourself a limited edition Evo X FQ-360. It is a more hardcore and performance-oriented limited edition of the regular Evo X. Arguably just as exclusive as this Civic Type R, and it will blow it away in almost every single way.
Yes 300 Civic RRs were sold out in Japan in 6 minutes, but that is Japan.
The only thing that justifies the price of this car in the UK is that it will be mostly hand-built, and will be customized and tailored to each owner's taste.

That can be argued for any 'special edition' car out there.. People who can afford these cars already know why it cost a lot and they're willing to pay for it, so value must not be on the top of their list. Again, nothing is wrong with Civic. Not sure why people discriminate it just because it bears the name "Civic". That's like saying "Yea the EVO is fast and all, but it's still a Lancer underneath. This Civic isn't the same Civic DX sold at the local Honda dealership. Yes...people actually DO like the CTRs and are WILLING to pay the cost, even if there are better values out there. This is a niche car that's suppose to satisfy just a handful of people. If Honda decided to build this car for mass production, then that's another (stupid) story..

It's still a goddamn Civic.
And sorry, but the Lancer doesn't have the same caricature as the Civic. There's a reason why the Sentra SE-R is a cool car, and the Civic Si is just boy-racer. Civics don't exactly have a mature reputation. Most of the people who own them put so much money on it that they could have bought a slightly used M3 and be faster to boot.
