It's sad though that a car that looks like the Optima only has 200 hp.

their 10 year warranty isnt as simple as it looks... basic one is 60miles, powertrain is 60,000miles for all owners, 100,000 miles for original owner only... infotainment/audi, paint warranty is "only" 36,000 miles/3 years, battery is 24 months.

toyota started offering 5 year/unlimited warranty in europe in some countries, and it is far more comprehensive than Hyundai/KIA. But of course, it is all marketing cost and considered so.

Yes, I know that the VW/Audi units are complex and difficult to repair. My point, though, was that
the ones that Ford has come out with just are nowhere near as pleasant to drive....at least the ones I myself have sampled in the Fiesta and Focus. And, don't forget......a significant part of a transmission's reliability is gauged in how hard it is driven and/or abused.

More detailed chart below. The CT200h is the most reliable of them all as can be seen in the top end of Lexus's reliability range.

Buicks are very popular in China...in fact, there, it is considered a prestige brand. Demand is so high there that GM has opened up Buick assembly-plants there.

And, as far as reliability goes, American-badged cars, as a whole, aren't necessarily the worst. There are brands from Europe, some quite expensive, that are perenially down at the very bottom.

Where's Land Rover? Is it so far down that it didn't even make the list.

No, not really. Like most things related to Hyundai/Kia, their warranty is full of fluff and hype, just like their products. Lots of hype, little substance.

http://www.hyundaiusa.com/assurance/...-warranty.aspx

The 10-year warranty is only 10 years on the powertrain, first of all. Secondly, it only applies to original owner only. 2nd owners automatically get dropped down to a 6 year warranty. So when buying a Hyundai/Kia used, the 10 year warranty doesn't apply, and doesn't exactly help out with any reliability worries. Basically it's almost like Hyundai is punishing you for buying used, and reduces the warranty if you are the 2nd owner.

Furthermore, the warranty excludes vehicle in commercial use, like taxi service, delivery vehicles, or rental cars. Most of the competition have no such limitations on their warranties. Vehicles in commercial situations go through a lot of hard abuse and tough situations, so the fact that Hyundai/Kia doesn't include it in their warranty only further raises doubts about long-term reliability of their vehicles.

The only good thing their warranty has is that for hybrid components, the warranty is transferable to 2nd owners. So you won't get a reduced warranty buying a used hybrid Hyundai, but that only applies to the hybrid components warranty.

I worked at a dealer for awhile that dealt with Hyundai warranties (not in the sales department, actually in service/parts dealing with this stuff) and I was pretty surprised at what was covered. Almost ever car that went into the shop had some kind of warranty work, and service writers were quick to write up Hyundais for warranty work instead of customer pay because of Hyundai's system, and Hyundai isn't in the business of denying warranty claims unlike other brands (Toyota/Lexus is pretty good about this too).

Does the warranty not work for second owners? Yes, but that applies to other brands as well. For the purposes of this thread and in relation to new car reliability, it is a consideration for new car buyers as it does mean the first owner will have less repair bills several years down the line.

And truth be told, drivetrain warranties are MORE important than the overall warranty because the little bits and pieces that might fail on a car usually happen in the first couple years while the big expensive bill repair jobs are the out of warranty drivetrain repairs. You don't want to have to pay for an automatic transmission repair job out of pocket... The only exception IMO are sunroofs. I'll never buy a car with a sunroof unless I can fix it myself, they are NEVER worth the trouble they eventually cause (on ANY brand mind you, they all go bad at some point).

All manufactures don't cover commercial use, Toyota, Nissan, Chrysler, Lexus don't warranty vehicles used for commercial use, Hyundai/Kia no surprise

Mazda #4? Hello!!?!?!

Did you guys miss that? That's great news for Mazda. Having owned 2, I know they are some of the most under appreciated cars out there.
