my friend is silly

he thinks he got a good deal from the car so he just met them half way on the doc feed at $295
if i was him, i wouldve negotiated it down to $100 or less

but then he really wanted the car and its his money
oh well

The "Doc" fee you describe in CA seems very similiar to the Dealer Processing Fee charged here at VA dealerships on new cars....a fee that is legal. It varies by dealership, but is not regulated, and can sometimes run $300 or more. It's similiar to what is charged across the river in MD, although state law there currently limits it to $99. MD sales tax on both new and used cars, though, is higher than in VA, so it more or less evens out.

Dunno but Toyota "includes" it in the new car price (doc fee and adminstration fee). I guess that's one less thing we have to worry about. I don't recall paying for documentation on the smart either but I could be wrong. i'll have to double check the contract.

Mitsubishi charges ~$600 for cash purchases and ~300 for financing.
I laughed at the fact that they penalize you for paying cash. I would not pay it and would incorporate it into the final amount minus tax.

Wow 12% tax on used car in CA? I am glad that i've moved out of that state 20yrs ago. I loved the state back then whe Regan's ruled. In Texas it is 6.25% on new and used car. I might give them $100 for "doc fee" if i really like the car and the price is right too, but $500 is fuxk-up especially in this economy.

Doc fees are usually BS and entirely negotiable. This is just another new way for the dealer to add profit. Fees fees fees.

It is CANADA, not Cali

But I am sure Cali will be near 12% soon

GST tax is refundable to those those who reside in the U.S. & travel to Canada to purchase items.. You must obtain the paperwork at the airport, fill it in & mail it back with copies of the product reciepts.

6.25% in TX? It's less than half that (3%) in VA for a new car, but, of course, TX has no state income tax...we do.

Depends on the car you are bargaining on. If you are dealing on a Ho-Hum silver Camry or Accord, the dealer's lot is probably full of them......you can bet that that car (or one just like it) will indeed be there tomorrow or the next day. But if you are bargaining on a new bright-red or bright-yellow Camaro SS, it's going to be pretty much take it or leave it that day, with the terms they are offering.....chances are that car will be gone by sundown if you don't buy it.

My brother in South Carolina just bought a '10 Accord coupe for $28K and he said the sales tax is capped at $300 but unlike here in Jersey where we pay 7% and only $60-$90 per year on plates,he pays a percentage of the car's value yearly.
