Sounds like your off to a good start with the pathfinder's and 4Runner's etc... I've owned several Ford Explorer's and they've all handled like champs no problems. I like Jeep Grand Cherokee's, but I did have transmission problems with that car. Not sure how a Hyundai Santa Fe handles on trails, but they should be fairly cheap too. You'd have to look hard, but I think a Honda Pilot may be able to handle a trail. I'd probably stay away from Chevy Blazers and Tahoe's, as well as Durango's. Just my $0.02

Older pathfinders and 4runners are good, although a bit underpowered compared to the old American SUVs that usually have V8 engines.

no, not at all
poor reliability
trooper is a hit and miss too
often have poor gasket/oil burning problems

stick with pathfinder and 4runners if u are going only for 2k

1996 pathfinder was a decent SUV
so was 4runner from that era
