..but Toyota did recall some 1996 Camrys for defective cruise controls that could cause sudden acceleration.

It's probably not the right time for that from a PR standpoint (although personally I wish they would question or challenge the story). It's best for Toyota to apologize, take their lumps keep working on any real issues and move on.

Thanks. After some thought, I had actually deleted that original post where I made that statement, because it's hard to tell just what actually happened in that car and how she dealt with it. You can't necessarily accuse her of lying or even gross exaggeration, though I agreed, in my reply to flipside909, (see that response, #762) that some things about her account with the transmission shift lever sound fishy.

Here's car guru Ed Wallace's take on the whole thing. Great article in todays BusinessWeek:

WALLACE'S WORLD February 25, 2010, 3:42PM EST
The Toyota Witch Hunt
Much of the testimony from Congress's Toyota hearings is riveting and emotional but can't be trusted, writes Ed Wallace

I wouldn't be too sure of that. The Ford Explorer suffered extensively after the tire debacle and even today, its brand equity is greatly reduced. Firestone went out of business...it was a brand that had existed for years and one big mistake killed its ENTIRE business.

We will see the effect of this for years to come.

Interesting to see how some media have pulled back on their Toyota attacks, and others have even sympathized or sided with the company. These recent testimonies haven't really done Congress and the haters a lot of good...

IMO, she (Mrs. Smith) said something that gave her entire story away.

"All I ever wanted was for Lexus to take the car back"

Again, this is simply my opinion, but it's a severe case of buyer's remorse, plain and simple. I do not believe a single word of her story. She's just jumping on the "run-a-way Toyota" bandwagon.

Well I believe Ryan said the buyer of the ES after her has NO problems with the
car. She should be fish food, my 2 cents.

Yeah...I can't imagine anyone slamming the transmission into reverse at 100mph and not having any problems with it afterwards! I can't imagine that
lady I saw on television having enough strength to do that or even thinking about putting on the parking brake while traveling at 100mph.

I can see it now. Group shot of everyone with their cars...with everyone flipping "the bird" at the camera and a banner that says "I love my Toyota and FU Congress and Media". LOL

That's correct. Read this in it's entirety:
