DETROIT – U.S. auto sales in November showed more signs of stability, with Ford and Toyota reporting steady to higher sales.
But Chrysler struggled for another month, while Hyundai again posted double-digit sales growth.
Automakers are looking for signs of life in the auto market, which is recovering from a historic drop in sales that began last year. Sales in October were unchanged from a year ago, and stable numbers in November could signal a recovery is under way.
Small monthly auto sales increases are likely as the economy continues its slow improvement, but larger auto sales gains will not happen until the jobless rate drops substantially, and people feel confident spending money on big-ticket items, said Martin Zimmerman, a former Ford Motor Co. chief economist who now teaches at the University of Michigan.
The U.S. jobless rate hit 10.2 percent in October, a 26-year high, and Zimmerman said people are holding onto their vehicles until the rate begins to drop.
Carmakers continued to rely on discounts and other incentive spending to sell cars and trucks last month. Sales incentives rose 2 percent in November to $2,713 per vehicle, according to the auto Web site Edmunds.com.
Ford's sales were essentially flat compared to last November, at 122,846. But sales of crossovers rose 26 percent and sales of cars rose 14 percent. Trucks and SUVs saw double-digit declines. Crossovers are as roomy as SUVs but are built on lower car frames, which improve their fuel economy.
"We can see now that a modest economic recovery is under way," Ford senior economist Emily Kolinski Morris said.
Toyota said its U.S. sales rose 2.6 percent to 133,700, led by standbys like the Camry sedan and the RAV4 crossover. Hyundai sales soared 46 percent on the back of its top-selling Sonata sedan.
Chrysler said it sold only 63,560 vehicles last month, a decline of 25 percent, and it announced an array of sales incentives including zero percent financing and cash rebates designed to draw buyers into its showrooms.
Chrysler said that despite the decrease, its market share rose to 8.4 percent from 7.9 percent in October, a sign that consumer confidence in the company is building after it released its five-year business plan earlier this month.
Other automakers are reporting sales on Tuesday.
Ford said its hybrid sales increased 73 percent, to 2,361, as buyers gravitated toward gas sippers. At about $2.65 per gallon, regular gasoline is up around 50 cents over November of last year.
The Ford Fusion sedan, which leads the mid-size category in fuel-efficiency at 34 miles per gallon, posted a 54-percent increase from last November, shattering its previous record for full-year sales.
Overall U.S. sales are expected to rise compared with last November, when they fell to a 26-year low of 743,606, according to Ward's AutoInfoBank. Sales tumbled even lower in January and February before climbing steadily through the spring and summer.
Although the factors that drove down last November's auto sales, such as frozen credit and the stock market collapse, have abated, auto sales will not lead the economy out of recession, Zimmerman said.
"I think we have to see more of a coincident rise in the level of economic activity," he said. "I think it's a ways away. It's coming. It's not here yet."
Ford showed some optimism for the coming year, increasing first-quarter production plans by 58 percent to 550,000 vehicles. Its fourth-quarter production plan is unchanged.

Disclaimer- Some cars blend categories. You might not agree 100% where some are placed. This is informational only, you can decipher it as you please. This is not the golden list. Zeus didn't approve it. Its something I enjoy and like to share with members. Don't cry and run to mommy if you don't like where something is placed. Some cars and categories blend lines with me, I put them where I think they fit best. Yes I may add some cars together for informational purposes. If seeing some Lexus figures bunched together angers you that much you may need to visit a strip club and ask for the "Special" since you are that angry. Thanks
Also before making assumptions, be aware different vehicles have different sales goals and many times its not apples to apples. For instance its easy to say A car is outselling B car but B car might have much lower targets. Be aware of the sales goals.

HERNDON, Va., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Volkswagen of America, Inc. today reported November 2009 sales of 16,250 total units, representing a 13.7 percent increase over November 2008. November marks Volkswagen's fifth consecutive sales month above last year.
Volkswagen's stunning four door coupe, the CC, once again performed extremely well, and posted its best sales month ever with 3,187 units. The CC is an excellent example of what the Volkswagen Brand is all about -- affordable, fun-to-drive, and stylish German engineering.
The Jetta, Volkswagen's top selling nameplate, posted strong November results with 7,957 units, a 23 percent increase over November 2008. Demonstrating that today's consumers are placing a greater emphasis on cleaner, more fuel efficient vehicles, Volkswagen's clean diesel TDI models continue to perform especially well and accounted for nearly 25 percent of the brands total sales. The Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, Golf and Touareg TDI's sold 3,667 total units in November.
"We're thrilled not only with our November sales results, but also with the five consecutive months of sales growth," said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "Our clean diesel TDI models continue to perform extremely well, signifying that today's consumers are looking for not only affordability, but they're also placing a much greater demand for extremely fuel efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles as well. Our current Sign-then-Drive promotion is proving to be highly successful in attracting new customers to our brand, especially to many of our newer products like our CC, Tiguan, and TDI models. With our brands full range of affordable, stylish, efficient and fun-to-drive vehicles we're confident that our brand is well poised for future success in this market." Barnes added.

When it does arrive, it won't help much as the EX/FX are selling very poorly for such new vehicles. The G37 will be older with sales dropping. Amy gains made with the new models will be offset by losses of the older ones.
Lincoln passed them in sales YTD.

Okay now this is insulting. The much more expensive Lexus HS outsold the much cheaper "Peoples hybrid" Honda Insight last month. That is nuts!

Audi November sales maintain record share pace
- Audi November sales total 6,810 vehicles; year-to-date imported luxury market share in U.S. maintains record high of 8.3%
- Best month in 2009 for Audi Q5 and S4 models
- Launch of A3 TDI, strong Q7 TDI sales continue fuel-efficiency leadership for Audi
HERNDON, Va., Dec 1, 2009 - Audi today reported November U.S. sales of 6,810 luxury performance cars and SUVs, a result that maintained the Audi share of U.S. imported luxury vehicle sale at record levels so far this year.
Through the first 11 months of the year, the Audi share of the imported luxury car market in the U.S. stood at 8.3% compared to 7% from a year earlier, based on preliminary industry sales reports. For the month of November 2009, the Audi share also stood at 8.3%.
November sales of the Audi Q5 and S4 models were strong. The popular Q5 crossover achieved 1,509 sales in November, exceeding the record set in August 2009. The S4 sedan also saw its best month since its September 2009 launch.
Audi also enjoyed another positive month for its TDI ® clean diesel offerings. Sales of the much-anticipated A3 TDI began in the month. With an EPA estimated 42 MPG highway mileage, it achieves the best fuel-economy of any luxury car in the U.S. For November, TDI models made up 43% of all A3 sales.
The Q7 TDI experienced a strong consumer response that elevated the TDI mix of Q7 sales to 46%, notably impressive in light of tight inventories.
“Consumers’ reception to our newer models, including the Q5 and S4 sedan has proven nothing short of enthusiastic, which affirms that our design and engineering efforts were precisely on target,” said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. “We are encouraged by these latest sales figures and have an optimistic outlook on the coming months.”
Audi A5 Coupe and Cabriolet sales of 1,074 cars made November the second-best month of 2009 for that popular model line.
Audi Certified Pre-Owned Sales for November were 1,535 for the month, bringing year-to-date CPO sales to 26,439.
