I mean to recharge it like 30 or 40%, do not let it drain completly or it will shorten the life span. With Ni-Cad batteries, let it drain completly before recharge.

Diesel all the way in this case. While the Prius does have its place, the diesel Golf is just so much more appealing to me compared to the Prius.

With the Prius you have to worry about long term things like the battery pack which is just not an issue with the Golf. Also, the interior of the Golf is hands down nicer compared to the Prius.

Don't get me wrong, Toyota hybrids do have their place but the Golf diesel looks to be a better overall package.

long term, diesels have a lot more issues with reliability than hybrids... from big turbos, sophisticated injectores, expensive bosch pumps to the clutch and transmission.

You can get 100,000 mile diesels quite cheap in germany these days... of course, petrols hold their value even less here ;-).
