With all those towns and cities in trouble with their budget, the cops will be riding in a Ford Focus soon

General Motors and Ford, respectively, announced their own plans for all-new police cars that will be 'purpose-built' * that is, specifically designed and built as police cruisers.
The problem is that cops don't WANT new models. They LIKE the Ford Crown Vic, for a number of reasons. It has a durable, full-frame chassis that can take a lot of abuse in pursuit chases, plenty of room in the back seat for police dogs, prisoners, and other gear, a BIG trunk for all the rest of the gear they carry, a large electrical system to run all the radios, computers, lights, etc.....and, of course, a reasonably powerful V8. The RWD, of course, is not good for slippery roads, but when conditions merit, they can simply put on a set of rear tire-chains.

Ford seems determined to "fix" something that isn't broken.

Provincial police has like ten or so Charger SRT8's around here. If you look close enough, you can see our tax dollars coming out the tailpipes.

We are seeing cost reductions in vehicle choices in CA for many city cops where the cars are used largely on surface streets. Best place to see them besides police station is at Starbucks.

You mean the NEXT-best place, don't you? Usually the best place is at a Donut shop.

Donut shops are old school, many have closed and the younger cops these days worry about waistline. Starbucks is the MO today.

It's adequate for emergency use. In reality in the rare instances where they need to haul in prisoners they always call for backup anyway (which they can request big cruiser or paddy wagon).

The back seat of a police cruiser isn't exactly spacious to begin with.

And what will the cops do when they want to shake down a hooker

Seriously, where I am, they are starting to down size administrative police cars, some are even Hybrids.
