It is indeed a good move. The power will be more like 335hp with 369ft/lb available via overboost as BMW plans to bump up the output in the current
N54 for MY2011 until the N55 arrives. These numbers seem in tune with the current
N54 anyways as BMW plays games with the numbers it publishes.
The "40" moniker will also adorn the upcoming 2012 3 series (340i) & 1 series 140i.
Some of us suggested that Lexus should do the same thing with the LS.

I think this will probably outsell the 750i, not just because of price, but because this is plenty of power for most people and it's more efficient.
Good job BMW.
Also...I am still not keen on an "LS 350". I have no problem with them putting a V6 in the LS but my problem is that the 2GR-FSE only has what? 277 lb-ft of torque? That's not enough for a big sedan like this...it needs to be more like 310lb-ft at least. HP is fine but it will definitely need more torque. The LS 460 weighs almost 550lbs more than a GS 350. Imagine that heft moving around with just 277lb-ft to push you. Revving high in a sedan like this doesn't seem right.

As the OP said I think that if Lexus made a V6 LS they should go the hybrid route (ala the Mercedes S400h). The base engine for the next LS could be a 360hp hybrid LS450h. That would allow them to make the next standard LS an LS550, with 420hp and lots more torque. Then the next highend hybrid LS could be an LS650h with 500hp or more .

Lexus doesn't need to bring the LS or the GS down to that level. Remember that Lexus has plans for hybrid versions of the ES and IS, so I don't think the GS or LS will have a hybrid version of the 2.5L, and I don't think they need to have that type of setup either.
