Post Mercedes boss: Maybach is "is not significant or relevant"

http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsAr...llCars/245878/

Merc boss Dieter Zetsche has admitted that the super luxury Maybach saloon will be facelifted next year - but he refused to confirm that a next-generation car was being planned, adding to rumours that the brand is being axed.

"The contribution of Maybach is not significant or relevant but there are only two players in this market and we are one of them. But there are no plans in the long run," he told Autocar.

Zetsche also revealed that he thinks that luxury buyers' tastes are changing towards more "discreet and subtle luxury".

Technically, Zetsche is right. Maybach exists only as a low-volume competitor to Rolls/Bentley, two other low-volume makes. None of the three have a significant impact on the worldwide auto market, outside of a few niche big-bucks areas like Manhattan and Hollywood/Beverly Hills.

I want to see Lexus put something out to compete with those cars.

There's not enough of a market for it. In fact, that is the whole issue of this thread.

I am sure you have heard of the Toyota century, it does not sell many units but they still have it.

I think it would be great if Lexus could make a limo that has that extra little bit, but something that looks decent (the century looks terrible).

Basically, he's saying that luxury buyers want a Lexus.

Agreed, I've only seen 3 Maybachs here and dozens of Rolls/Bentlys in the same amount of time.

With them having a LFA, I think it would be a great move. Here is a long rumored pic of such a car...

I don't think Lexus or an ultra luxury brand from Lexus will have a chance here.

The people interested in a Rolls Royce or Maybach are very stratus conscious and in order to fulfill this need for status a brand has to have among others an impressive type of brand heritage and prestige. Creating a brand out of the blue to compete here is very risky if you ask me.

I don't think Lexus will be able to sell a luxury car
I don't think Lexus will be able to sell sporty GS/IS cars
I don't think Lexus will be able to sell SUVs
I don't think Lexus will be able to sell a 100k car
I don't think Lexus will be able to sell a M/AMG competitor
I don't think Lexus will be able to sell a LFA

We've heard it before and we've seen the results. While I totally agree that this is a HUGE status/image area its clear that is not ALL that is needed as Maybach has failed. Not to mention if we get down to it, the RR and Bentley of old is gone. Today they share tons of parts with the companies that now own them.

Who is to say if Lexus continues their incredible climb, that a super sedan might not come from them.

That said, I completely tip my hat off to this entire class as they serve opulence, luxury, prestige that most cars can only dream of!

I agree, jumping in and making a $400K off the bat could be a disaster.

BUT, I don't think creating another brand is in order just yet, what I am talking about is a limo that is more than the LS , maybe even fill in the Gap between the S class/LS and Rolls/Maybach then gradually increase the features ect to exceed those on the Rolls ect. Do it slowly and purposefully and people will buy the cars.
