Mercedes-Benz GLK and C-Class to get diesel in the U.S. by 2010
http://www.egmcartech.com/2008/07/31...the-us-by-2010
The 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class will hit U.S. shores by early 2009. Initially, only the GLK 350 will be available in the U.S. The GLK 350 is powered by a 3.5 liter V6 engine producing 268 horsepower.
This week the German luxury automaker held a press launch for the upcoming compact SUV and showed some pre-production units of the GLK 4Matic powered by an all-new turbocharged 2.2 liter CDI 4-cylinder engine. Why?
According to a spokesman that spoke with InsideLine, both the C-Class and the GLK-Class will be eventually be sold with the 2.2 liter diesel in the U.S. The engine produces 167 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Fuel-economy is estimated at 34mpg for the GLK.
The spokesman said both models will arrive in 2010.

I would seriously wait until actual consumers report the mileage they are getting. This will provide us with a wide variety of data (due to different driving styles) on which the actual fuel economy can be reliably estimated.
I've never felt that car magazines or the EPA gave accurate fuel economy results. I honestly cannot picture the boys at BMW and Driver trying to drive in an efficient and relaxed manor for example - and yet they have the guts to actually report about the fuel economy they're achieving during their testdrives.

For reference, these are the ratings (Euro cycle) in U.S. MPGs
S350: 16/32 MPG
S400 hybrid: 22/37

That's one reason why I've said, in other threads, that I think new-generation diesels have a future in the U.S. if people will simply just go out and test-drive them. Too many people still have their minds back with the junk that passed for diesels 30 years ago.

no surprise to read this. The only surprise is why we haven't got more diesel options on the market. I see nothing wrong with the added mpgs and to ft/lbs of torque

I see the GLK especially benefiting from this engine choice even in the US market.
IMO (based on experiences in the last decade) Mercedes 4-bangers tend to be unusually refined, smooth and quiet when compared other 4 bangers, I fully expect this engine to be nice.
