When it comes to the Genesis in particuliar, what's factual is the Genesis in all its forms sold 2,354 units in Dec '09 which is a 126% increase compared to Genesis sales in Dec '08. What's aslo factual is that the Genesis is nowhere near its sales target when Hyundai introduced the Coupe version.

In other words, the success or failure of the Genesis is open to debate and can be spun in any which way. Here's my own spin. Which manufacturer wouldn't want to see a 126% increase in the sales of their current flagship product? The Genesis is doing well but nowhere as well as Hyundai would like. Hyundai has a lot of work to do to become a player in the premium/luxury market.
Fair enough, I can agree with that. Most of the luxury wannabe class experienced sales increases in december, so I don't think it's just a Genesis/Hyundai phenomenon, though.

Thanks CJ and RX300-BV.....it was my bad, not sure how I misread the data twice as I did go back to the Hyundai press release before making my statements. Thanks for correcting me.

I'm a fan of the Genesis's as yall know so I was just beating up the sales, not the cars.

Also, Toyota sold almost 6K Venzas last month. A nice bump, and a good number for a niche vehicle like that.

W/ regard to Genesis sales for Hyundai, the Genesis sedan has been a decent success for the brand.

About 16k Genesis sedans were sold in 2009, that's twice the amount for the Infiniti M and GS and more than twice the amount for the Audi A6.

Yeah, the Genesis sedan is a newer model, but otoh, it doesn't have the established customer base that the M, GS and A6 have and Hyundai didn't throw nearly as much $$ on the hood to move the Genesis as Infiniti and Audi did w/ the M and A6.

As for the coupe, it pretty has been a disappointment (Hyundai needs to put in its new DI engines and not detune the turbo as much as it did, as well as reworking the awkward grille shape/size sooner than later).

Also consider that the Genesis costs half as much as the GS or A6 in some configurations. It's a significantly cheaper car so comparing their sales volume is apples to oranges, at best.

Awesome info GS69!!

I was just thinking about this the other day actually...lol. At first glance, it doesn't appear that fleet/rental units have much impact on luxury brands. But it sure looks like it would dramatically reduce the true number of American and entry level vehicles that are actually purchased by the consumer. Perhaps an even more telling indicator of the state of the Big 3???

So essentially this data shows that hardly any true consumers actually buy Impalas, Taurus', Town Cars, Escape Hybrids, Mercury Grand Marquis', Crown Vics, Mitsubishi Gallant, Malibu Hybrids, HHR, Uplanders and Terrains.

Anyone else notice a common theme? Curious what sales numbers would look like overall by brand without fleet/rental sales???
