Toyota Etios - affordable, quality car for world
Think of a car designed especially for India and I bet that most of you (including myself) will imagine a small el-cheapo hatchback designed to be as cheap to buy and run as possible so that people are able to upgrade to covered four wheeler transportation from their usual bikes.
And so when Toyota announced that they would be unveiling a “for India” compact at the Delhi expo this month, I had imagined that sort of car. After all, Toyota has Daihatsu K-car expertise at their disposal. Boy was I wrong! Just watch the video above, which teases the Indian-bound concept that has been named the Toyota Etios, and you’ll see what I mean. In case you were wondering, the word Etios means ‘the origin of’.
Although Indian streets are full of small Maruti Suzuki hatchbacks, the demand for sedans there are also sufficient enough not to ignore. Which is Suzuki took the trouble to sedan a sedan version of the Swift. The Toyota Etios compact concept car is in fact a small sedan, and since the video says this car is going to be available globally as well, we could potentially be looking at the next generation Toyota Vios replacement, or at least a car that shares a common platform and engine range with a future Vios. Or this could be a sedan that slots in under the Vios. We will know once we find out what the size of this car is exactly.

- New affordable sedan/hatch for worldwide markets (starts sales in India, then moves to Brazil and other developing markets).
- Car is supposed to be 30% cheaper than Yaris, but not dirt cheap. Toyota wants it to be quality car with quality powertrains.
- Engines are 1.4 D4D diesel from Yaris (expensive engine!) and 1.2l or 1.33l petrol. 1.2l is assumed because in India there are tax breaks for cars at 1.2l or under... 1.33l is existing dual-vvti engine (class leading).
It will be quite interesting to see what it is at the end. Car is being launched in few days during Indian autoshow.

i am quite suprised it will be getting 1.4 D4D which is quite expensive engine.
Important thing here is that Toyota did not have small vehicles for developing markets - it sold existing Yarii and Corolla's, which are obviously quite expensive when you live in developing nation... If sucessful, this should quite enlarge Toyota's sales worldwide.

never ever ;-).... its low cost car for a lot less than Yaris (-30%) for developing markets... so far it seems production will be in India, Russia and Argentina for their local markets.
India has 50 million middle class, out of 1.4 billion population. They sold only 1.5mil cars last year, and almost 9 million 2 wheelers - in developed countries, cars outsell 2 wheels by 5x-10x. They are predicting that market will double in next 5 years.

hatch is fine, sedan is ... built for price... interior looks standard. Keep in mind this is car that is significantly cheaper than cheap Yaris... I expected it looking more built for the price
