Chris Bangle: Great cars are Art
I was discussing with a member as to wether cars are art . My stand point was that cars are art . Cars are designed by artists and engineers. They are sculpted and shaped with clay before even produced. They are a product of a vision, an idea, an emotion. What I think is so amazing about automotive design is how form and function meet in one unique shape. If cars were not art then wouldnt all cars look the same ???????? A little food for thought
I found this video and thought it was a really cool lecture by Chris Bangle about why cars are art and why they have soul.
What do you guys think???? This should make for a good discussion......or it could be a little too deep for car chat
Watch the video guys ,its really an amazing lecture that very few could see

Didnt watch the youtube video yet, but a cars design is a form of art. I dont see how its not an art form. Its starts as an idea, then the original drawing, CAD model, 3D model, clay, production (doesnt have to be in that specific order, but you get the idea). A lot of industrial design programs usually coincide with art and architecture classes like at my college.

As much as I don't like his 'flame design' and the infamous bangle butt, I think he did what BMW had to do. Without that controversial design, BMW would have grown to look older and not contemporary/modern/(insert whatever marketing lingo works here).
The Z4 still looks like a prehistoric fish to me but it was something radical. The way the line goes through the body and the surface and proportions are pretty neat too...at least I think. The E60 almost looks boring to me lately. And wasn't the post facelift E46 that we all love the first 'Bangled' (I guess, for the lack of better word) car?
If I were him, I'd be happy with my career. I mean, what car enthusiast wouldn't recognize the name Chris Bangle? It may be more known of a name than say Giorgetto Giugiaro. I think it's an achievement he can have his name world reknown as an artist.
But yeah, E38/E39 > E60/E65 still IMO
