I just picked up Ranger #11 today. I've owned a new Ranger every 15 months or so since 1997 when I bought a red 1997 off the lot brand new. Today I picked up my third white one, first one in this particular body style. (98,99,00 body)

Like many people I keep a truck around incase I need it and for the winter months, always handy. My buddy fell in love with F-150's and has had as many of them as I have had Rangers.

I went the last 16 months or so without a truck and when I hopped in today and popped the clutch it was great to be back in one. Ford clutches are all the same. If you get in and it doesn't feel like the other 10 you have had, give it back... something isn't right.

Anywho I don't know how many Ford truck fans there are around CL, I know a few off the top of my head. I tell you these trucks are a sickness. This one was the cheapest purchase of any ranger I have made yet. It was on the side of the road, price was low-low, and truck drove great....... damnit I picked up #11.

Just had tires put on (hence the set in the bed).

No truck is the same except the very first two top pics of the red truck with the window banner. this means the bottom is not the same truck.

they look great. I especially like the black one with the blacked out headlights. The black against that chrome with those wheels just works.

 

Yah, that one was in front of my first audio store. Both the store, and the truck were my fav's except for the first red 97 truck which was well..... #1. That first and second red pic is 13 years old. Yikes.

Seems like one of three things here. You either have money, like the new-vehicle smell, or put a LOT of miles on each one.

I have a lot of respect for the Ranger. Though its ride, particularly in the beefier 4X4 and heavier-load versions, is way too stiff for my tastes, it has a generally good reputation, a wide following, and has stood the test of time in competition with newer compact/mid-size trucks.

 

I drove one a long time ago and was happy the way it loved to light up the rear tires and could do a little sliding in the thing in the rain. Aerodynamically it was as a nightmare. If you took the thinh up to 100-110 mph you can feel the back side lifting. Very scary. Cool for running around town but its not high speed car

 

I drive the HELL out of my trucks. I don't like beating on my Lexus (plural) so I usually get a nice tough truck and run it like I stole it.

Spent today cleaning this one in a full detail.

Fresh and clean These seats are gone next week though! Buckets and a console for me please.

Lightly-loaded RWD pickups can easily spin the rear tires, not necessarily because of a lot of power, but simply because the rear end is so light...there is little traction. They also, as you note, have a tendency to fishtail on slippery surfaces because of that lack of rear traction. That is why ABS, at least on the rear wheels, has been standard on pickups for many years now. Adding weight to the back (many truck owners use snow or sandbags), of course, helps.....as does 4WD.

 

Ranger has had an amazing long and productive run for Ford. They are durable trucks, a friend of mine has over 300K miles on his Ranger.

btw - Stability control and Traction control is now standard on Rangers for much better rear end discipline.
