I was browsing the net and came across this recent Australian review of the new E class E220 CDI. 5.9 l / 100 km = 39.8 mpg! And the performance is quite acceptable, too. They're quite common here in Stuttgart.
"Yet this car’s ADR fuel test returned a combined consumption of just 5.9 litres/100km, and will still go from 0-100km/h in 8.3 seconds."

HS250h ;-).
In Winter, my GS350 AWD averages 11 MPG. I kicked 3G Prius's butt around the city, accel/brake, accel/brake, and got 40 MPG. Would probably get 8 MPG in my GS... And Prius has pretty darn good low speed acceleration, i was not missing anything ;-). Well, except those huge GS leather wrapped armchairs ;-).

I thought the 350 was exclusive only to North America and Japan (AFAIK in Europe you can only choose between GS 300, GS 460 or GS 450 h).
Or did you import it (through other channels?)
@anyways
The new 2.1 liter diesel engine may be neat..........but if it does not have the Bluetec thing, then it may not be sold in Stateside.
In that way, if you want petrol, then you may wanna consider an E300.

The CDI E classes are selling for 8-10 grand over the E350, that is not something I think is economically smart (paying a premium) on a massively depreciating asset like a benz.
The lexus Hybrids have been under performers that I've seen. We had a RXH for a company car and it got 20mpg combined. That’s ridiculous for a "hybrid".
I keep coming back to the Prius but I'd really like to still have my big leather seats and not have everyone think im a damn hippy.

Regarding topic of luxury cars in the US market and good MPG, the tier 1 lux automakers (including Lexus, Mercedes, BMW) all have the technology to step-up fuel efficiency should the lux market demand it.

My Hummer H2 gets around 14 on the highway, 10 in the city. My Lamborghini LP640 Roadster gets about 12 on the highway, if I'm driving it hard it drops to 4 MPG. City is around 8. My LS460L gets around 24 on the highway, and I think 16-18 in the city. My Rolls Royce Phantom gets about 10 in the city, but surprisingly gets about 24 on the highway.
