Even if Toyota has been tarnished with the massive recalls in a few years people will forget and toyota will have remedy the issues and bring quality back to the Toyota name.

If CA wants to keep and bring back jobs to this state, stop f'n making up new taxes for corporations to try to balance the states budget issues. Companies are not stupid! They will go to whatever state is cheapest! Instead fix our current state policies and issues that are wasting money like half the people on welfare don't even deserve it and the crooked politicians. I swear only in LA can a mayor get re-elected after he openly admitted to infidelity. If it was anyone else all hell would have broken lose. So many morons living in CA which has made this state such a joke! If any other state had CA weather I would have moved a long time ago.
Come on now, we have Hollyweird here, it doesn't matter what you do here, you can get away with anything in California!

Nummi started in 1984 as a joint venture of General Motors and Toyota. The Chronicle has covered this economic disaster since GM pulled out of the partnership last June as part of its bankruptcy, and Toyota decided in August to end production in the plant that had been its manufacturing beachhead in the United States.

GM announced pulling out first and months ago, because as a bankrupt company they could not financially justify many plants.

It was a joint-venture not joint ownership. GM owns the building (the actual structure where the Firebird/Camaro were built) where the Corolla & Vibe (formerly Nova, Prism) are manufactured in. The Tacoma is also built on the same property, just adjacent to the building the Corolla & Vibe are built BUT Toyota owns that building.

Just a fun fact....if you ever notice on NUMMI made Corollas and Vibes, the VIN# starts with 1N for the Corolla and 5N for Vibe and previous Nova/Prism. The 1 and 5 indicate US built vehicles and the second character represents the manufacturer. Because the Corolla is built in the building that GM owns, despite being built by a Toyota manufacturing process, it's designated as a Nummi built car. Because the Tacomas are built in a building erected and owned by Toyota, the vin starts as 5T.

The Corolla is built at Nummi, TMMC in Canada and Japan.
The Vibe was exclusively built at Nummi.
The Tacoma is built at Nummi and TMMBC in Mexico.

Thanks, guys. .........Good responses. Here on the East Coast, we normally don't hear a lot about that plant. I knew from years ago, of course, that it was a joint GM/Toyota venture, and the Toyota/Chevy/Geo/Pontiac vehicle models that were produced there, but GM's role in the ownership/management was unclear. It makes sense, though, that GM's bankrupcy last year would have affected its role in the closing.
