Plus 10. The first SC has always been considered a classic and winning Lexus. It's the 2SC that flopped. Who wrote that?

Neither really flopped in my opinion. However, they are completely different cars.

I don't think Lexus would be as interested in producing a CL fighter as a SL fighter. The demand for a SL like roadster is bigger than a large 4-seater coupe like the CL. The CL has always been a much slower seller than the SL even though they cost about the same.

Now the thing is coupes DO NOT sell. Only the 3 coupe and G37 coupe sell in figures over 1k a month. If you go to the monthly sales figures, most coupes sell under even 600 units a month. Benz doesn't move many coupes.

So the fight to get coupes is still an uphill battle.
You're right one with that last point.

Not even BMW has a coupe variant of every model. They pretty much only have 2 entry level coupes (3 series and 1 series) and then the 6 series. Only Mercedes has a coupe version of nearly every model (with the S class having both the CLS and the CL spawned off of it).

Lexus will more likely take the BMW approach and make the IS line match the 3 series, and the SC will likely match the 6 series. A LF-Ch may even be in the works. I wish they would go the Merc route but since Lexus is so conservative I doubt it.

I personally would prefer Lexus to go after the SL over the CL, but in reality they probably won't go after the SL or the CL. The CL is as big as an LS and the SC is currently on the GS platform (albeit the last gen GS's platform). Also price-wise both the CL and SL are over $100K.

Since the SC is based on the GS, it's more likely that the next gen will be going up against the 6 series and the Jaguar XK. I personally love the Jag XK and if the SC was as beautiful, luxurious, and sporty I think it could be a homerun. I would like the next gen SC to be offered in both coupe and roadster variants like the 6 and XK are.

The CLS is E-class based.

Next gen will be S class based

Also it appears that Mercedes is going to kill the CL and replace it with a next gen S class Coupe similar to what they did with the CLK and the E class coupe.

That should be interesting, and it'll mean that MB will have a Coupe variant of all their sedans.

Interesting thread with just about everything covered.
All I can add is there just has to be a new SC. It's an OG in Lexus lore, one of the cars if not the car that took Lexus to the next level.
Many people ridiculed the 1st LS for being a S-Class copy, a cheap imitation. The 1st GS was nice but didn't get the respect it deserved until later. It was the 1st SC that made people respect the Lexus line of cars.
It must continue with a fixed roof model with more than one power offering.

Makes no difference in reality whatsoever, just using different designations .....

oh hell no, I find the XJ/6 series softtop unacceptable. I mean in design and execution. A nice GT with sporting credentials, and a "F" model offered. A hybrid would be great too.

You are absolutely right my friend. The SC430 is a beautiful car indeed but Lexus should've stuck with the original coupe design and improved on it. They should have made an CL competitor from that design. It was the car to have for a long time in the 90's and it never gets old. Ladies would go crazy when someone pulled up in a gold/gold SC400. Although a solid car, the 430 just dont do it like the old one did. Should Lexus keep it now? Sure but it needs a redesign like yesterday so it can keep up with the SL or maybe even the TT but Lexus needs a CL rivial.
