Talking Mannequin in carpool lane earns woman ticket

Deputy not fooled by carpool mannequin
Published: Feb. 4, 2010 at 4:03 PM

ISLANDIA, N.Y., Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Deputies in New York's Suffolk County said a woman was ticketed for driving in a carpool lane alone with a mannequin disguised as a passenger.

Mike Sharkey, Suffolk County Sheriff's Office chief of staff, said Deputy Robert Howard was driving Tuesday on the Long Island Expressway in Islandia when he grew suspicious of a car in the high-occupancy vehicle lane because the passenger was wearing a visor and sunglasses despite the cloudy weather, Newsday reported Thursday.

Sharkey said Howard pulled over Kathleen Frascinella, 61, of Mount Sinai, N.Y., and discovered her only passenger was a mannequin dressed in clothing including a blazer and a scarf.

Frascinella was issued a $135 citation for operating a vehicle in the HOV lane without a passenger.

"At first glance, this may seem humorous, but it is not a joking matter when you drive off with a ticket," Sheriff Vincent DeMarco said.
LOL I have wondered about how effective that would be, perhaps at night? The lady said she had been "doing this for years," but knew that one day she would be caught.

Also some sites are now "grading" the fashion appropriateness/accuracy of the dummy!

A sole driver in the carpool lane is a $1100 ticket in California.

Guys, don't do it.

California really needs to update their signs. I think most of them are still showing $341 as the penalty. I use carpool lanes every day and there is always someone driving without a passenger.

What's a car pool lane? LOL We don't have no stinkin' car pool lanes in the Lehigh Valley, and dam glad we don't.

LOL! Very creative although based on the above posts probably not a good idea.

It does remind me of a customer about 10 years ago who was an elderly lady who always had a male mannequin in the passenger seat. When I asked her why, she said for security. She felt by having the extra 'person' in the car someone would be less likely to approach her while she was traveling. I'm not sure how effective it was but I'm pretty sure she never drove in the HOV lane or got a ticket

Another way to extort people, knowing people will break the ridiculous law and therefore have to pay a fine for it, kind of what happened to this individual.

Wow that is pretty cool. If she got her windows tinted, it would've added to the whole dummy mystique.

I've always wondered what it would be like to travel with a dummy, she did a good job on it too! would've fooled me...

Reminds me of a King of the Hill episode, where Dale does something like that.

Certainly not an original technique.
