I'm sorry but I think Volvo is trying to kill itself.
2011 Volvo S60: Priced
2011 Volvo S60: Priced
•Redesigned 2011 Volvo S60 starts at $38,550.
•2009 Volvo S60 started at $31,000.
•The new S60 debuted earlier this year at the Geneva auto show.
ROCKLEIGH, New Jersey — Volvo said its redesigned 2011 S60 sedan will be priced starting at $38,550 when it goes on sale late this year in the U.S. The price includes an $850 shipping charge.
Volvo is repositioning the revamped S60 considerably upmarket from the 2009 model, which started at around $31,000.
First unveiled as a concept at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, the production version of the new S60 debuted earlier this year at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show.
The latest edition of the car is a bit larger inside and out than its predecessor. In addition to all-new sheet metal and a new cabin, Volvo has beefed up the powertrain.
Whereas the 2009 S60 came with a 208-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine, the new model is fitted with T6 hardware, specifically a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 rated at 300 hp and 325 pound-feet of torque, driving all four wheels through a six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission.
Buyers can further inflate the sticker on a 2011 S60 T6 AWD to well over $40,000 by selecting from several options packages, including a Premium package ($1,500), a Climate package ($800), a Multimedia package ($2,700) and a Technology package ($2,100) that bundles such safety systems as pedestrian detection, collision warning with auto brake and lane-departure warning. Free-standing options include an active chassis, a blind-spot information system and front and rear park assist.
The 2011 S60 also comes with a five-year/60,000-mile warranty.

I dont think the price is that bad. Kind of expected. Its pretty much a previous gen S60R. 300hp with AWD. Option list doesn't seem that much different either. Mid 40k again like the S60R

Also Volvo did the same thing with the XC60. They came out with a fully loaded model and then later introduced a stripper model with FWD and a non-turbo engine for a few thousand less. Expect a $32~K S60 to arrive shortly after the AWD model's debut...

Yes, that base price is a little higher than the outgoing 2009 model, but it is competitive with BMW's 335ix, and Volvo has packed a lot of extra standard equipment into the new four-door. While the previous car was available in three different trims, the 2011 S60 is offered only with a 300-horsepower turbocharged inline-six, a six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel-drive. A sport-tuned suspension package is standard, as are leather seats, a seven-inch in-dash screen, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a HD radio tuner, Sirius satellite radio are standard, and Volvo's City Safety automatic braking system.
If you ignore the badge snobbery, it is fairly priced with what it comes with.

Good points yall and I don't disagree with what it has, my thinking is people will not pay 40-50k for a S60 when the last model was 30-40k. Also as nice as the S60R was it wasn't a great seller at all.
Volvo sells about 4-5k vehicles a month here and they really need the new S60 to bring in some additional volume.

I think Volvo is somewhat of a niche brand that has a rather loyal following. I agree that the pricing is risky, but I think the Volvo faithful will come out of the woodwork to buy this car.
The only thing I can't stand is that interior, which looks like it was lifted from some late 90s Saab or Pontiac. The design is absolutely hideous. Otherwise I think the car looks and sounds great.
I think it would behoove Volvo to offer an entry level version with 220ish hp...despite all of the rage with the horsepower war, there are still plenty of customers who *gasp* aren't comfortable driving a vehicle with that much power. Such a model would widen the appeal and drop the base price a bit.

I think the interior looks great, albeit the vents are kind of strange. Materials look good, always loved the floating center stack as well. Plus, all new Volvos have killer stereos and amazing seats.

Volvo has done this with they're last 2 or so new model introductions (the XC60 being the most recent...). They debut a loaded AWD turbo model to make a "splash", and then a few months down the road they debut a FWD non-Turbo model.
I remember when the XC60 came out it's "base" price was higher than it's larger sibling the XC90 because the XC60 came standard with AWD turbo engine while the XC90 did not. I thought it would fail at it's price but then lo and behold a few months later a cheaper FWD XC60 debuted.
It's kinda the opposite of what the Germans do, but whatever, it's unique to Volvo.

Reliability would probably be the main reason. Volvos are a little spotty in that department.
Who? Right now, anyone who wants to help keep Saab in buisness. That, right now, is a little iffy.
I agree, though, the S60 looks like a nice package. They also seem to have done a nice job on the interior. That's the kind of wood paneling I like. The only thing I dislike are the two floating primary gauge needles....Volvo and Mercedes seem to have a penchant for that.
I also question who would buy a Saab over this as well. I hope the price is reasonable.

I always though the S40 competed with the 3 series/C class/IS on some level, and then the S60 with the GS/5/E and then the S80 was their highest sedan. However, I guess each of those models are too small for those classes.
anywhoo, I wonder what they have planned for the S80 then, because the price jump from the S40 to S60 is more than 10K while the jump from S60 to S80 is only 2K
