Default 2013 S Class Mule

In its earliest stages of development spies have caught a 2013 Mercedes S-Class mule undergoing testing in Germany.

While the car is heavily camouflaged, it appears a little wider and longer than the current S-Class. Regardless, styling is expected to be influenced by the F700 concept of 2007.

Under the hood, we can expect Mercedes to introduce the new ‘MoVe' (modular V-6 and V-8) engines. While details are limited, the engines will feature direct injection and turbochargers. As previewed by the Vision S 500 plug-in hybrid concept, Mercedes will offer an S-Class plug-in hybrid that will be able to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than six seconds while averaging at least 70 mpg (3.3 liters/100km).

On the performance side, the 6.3-liter (6208cc) V8 from the S63 AMG will be replaced by a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8. Despite this glimmer of good news, the V12s from the S600 / S65 AMG may be discontinued.

imperial gallons of course will be different. It might be a half electric half hybrid (ala Volt) which is why that number is so high because it takes into account the only electric portion.

A little longer? I dont know how much longer it can possibly get...

A plug-in hybrid S Class that will get 0-60 in less than 6 seconds?

I'll believe it when I see it.

I guess Lexus won't be the only ones without a V12 flagship

Imagine if Lexus developed a brand-new V12? That would be the ultimate irony .

If they re-position and fix Maybach I think dropping the V-12s with Benz makes sense and making Maybach V-12s only would be a good move.

Glad to see MPG is FINALLY a concern.

They SERIOUSLY need to reconsider another 2003 or so Accord roofline...yuck

Perhaps.....I understand your opinion

However the way I see it, I'm not happy about them getting rid of the AMG V12 AT ALL

Unless..........the new 5.5 twin-turbo AMG V8 engine HAS AT LEAST SAME OR MORE POWER AND SAME OR MORE TORQUE (I think the M275 AMG engine has 600+ horsepower and 1000 Newton Meters of torque).

Hence personally, I FULLY EXPECT the new 5.5 liter TT AMG V8 engine to have AT LEAST 600+ hp and 1000 Newton Meters of torque. Otherwise, I'd be disappointed.

Oh and I don't know if it's possible but if possible, I'd hope that MB and AMG are working to get their 7-speed SPEEDSHIFT gearbox to work with engines of 600+ hp and 1000 Nm of torque. But that's just my wish for it.

That's all for now

Seems intriguing. Though the 2013 MY is still very far away. Personally, I'd like to see a DI 3.5L V6 option, which it sounds like we will, as a less expensive model. I've been lauding MB for the S400 dropping the pricetag to $88K, and while I understand that the S class is the benchmark, well I believe that this car should start in the $70's. I think the application of the hybrid tech from the ML would be an excellent idea as well, though it doesnt appear to be as efficient as hybrid synergy drive. Perhaps because the MB 3.5L isn't exactly efficient for what it puts out.

I'm not so much interested in MB trying to squeeze more power out of their engines. I think that they would benefit more from losing some weight. Which, Audi seems to have found the means to do just that.

You can probably special order the S600 or the S65..some people will stay pay a huge premiums to drive V-12's.

A DI 3.5 V6 would be interesting (like the one used in the CLS 350 CGI).

In Asia Pacific countries, the S350 is the most sold here (contributes more than 90% of S Class sales here). So seeing an S350 CGI would indeed be something.

That and I too am not happy if they drop the V12 AMG version...........unless (as I've stated above) that the new 5.5 liter TT AMG V8 version would have same or better performance figures of the M275 engine.

In short, it needs at least 600 horses and 1000 Nm of torque (just like the current S65 AMG). Otherwise, this AMG version would just be a joke IMHO

MoVe sounds more like a dance sequence developed by Madonna than an engine developed by Mercedes.

Those days are long gone. Every powertrain a company offers in the US has to go through emissions/DOT cert., so they will either offer it officially or you can't get it at all unless you import it grey market.
