I'd like to see a hybrid version, along the lines of its brother Ford Escape. I also prefer the Escape's noticeably more squarish lines...the Edge's roofline is raked too much.

I do consider them to be of some value, but surely I don't expect high degrees of accuracy from any typical survey for reasons that you mentioned regarding data collection methods. I understand that opinions vary on this subject and I can respect that.
I've owned several vehicles where the reported CR reliability results tracked very close to my actual ownership experiences so I was able to validate what they reported against several vehicles.
So IMO the CR reliability charts have considerable value, more value than the CR road test results, etc.

But I think new car buyers can benefit too from the charts in the case of cars that have not been redesigned. Once the car changes to a completely redesigned/next generation model all bets are off.

The Crosstour, though (I won't use vulgar terms), despite its awkward-looking rear end, has pretty good road manners....pretty much what you would expect from a slightly-raised, AWD, Accord wagon. We'll see how the new Edge comes out, but, in general, vehicles like the Edge, being more high-stance, SUV-ish, can't equal the road manners of something like an Outback or Crosstour.

The difference is road manners of the Crossturd/Edge/Outback is so insignificant and so subjective. None of them have stellar road manners and all have mediocre instrumented tested handling characteristics despite the sweeping generalizations that are common internet hearsay. The minor differences are larely related to differences in CG with the Escape being the tallest as a ratio to width. All of these vehicles are tuned for ride quality over handling sharpness as the instumented testing data shows.
