This new Nissan VK56VD 5.6L V8 has BOTH direct injection and VVEL (electronically controlled infinitely variable valve lift).

The iForce 5.7L V8 for example lacks both those technologies, yet achieves close to the same HP, and virtually the same torque.
There are a whole bunch of variables that we do not know yet. From what I have seen at Toyota, DI adds about 25hp in the 3.5DI compared to non DI engines and about 20lb of tq.

A 19 hp gains for the Nissan 5.6 over the Toyota 5.7 seems about right. Doesn't the DI motors for Toyota require premium...we don't yet know if the 5.6 will run on premium or not. Also, I am more than certain that the upcoming 5.6 is a modified carryover 5.6 from the Armada SUV and not a brand new engine....if that is the case, then the new Patrol gets a 85 hp bumps form VVEL and DI...that is pretty impressive.

Obviously there are tons of variables at play here, but the cam profile on this version of the VK56VD was probably tuned for maximum torque at lower RPM's, which is more important in heavy truck applications. The exhaust is also probably more restricted than the M56. The M56 has full maximum torque of 417 lb.ft at 4,400 RPM. With the current QX56, it comes in at a lower 3,400 RPM. Even the huge 6.2 liter Vortec V8 in the Escalade only makes 417 lb.ft at a loftier 4,300 RPM. For trucks/SUV's, durability and torque at low RPM's is what is most important, not highest specific output.

Looks better than most of these behemoths. I certainly like it better than Land Cruiser. This looks lower and more contemporary. Interior is striking.

I always liked the Armada design. This is awful.

I like the new Infininti so far. It should do well against the LX, GL and Q7...the outdated Qx56 really doesn't compete with segment leaders GL and Q7...eventually Toyota is going to have to go to an IRS for the Land Cruiser and LX models.

I dislike both the new QX and the Patrol. The Patrol's exterior (while its roots aren't on glamor) is just too bland to compete against a LC. The QX just looks gross like most new Infiniti designs (the FX is awful, the M is boring but then again most vehicles in that class are pretty boring).

This vehicle looks alot smaller than the armada and QX but it supposed to be the same size. Not a bad thing. The interior looks great but i like the exterior on the infiniti more

Really, what kind of problems does the 7-speed have? Isn't it the same 7-speed as the G37? This is the first time I hear that unit has problems.

I know of 3 fx 50's that have had to have there tranny's swapped including ours because rough shifting, and ours only has 16000 kms on the clock......I dont think the tranny can handle the power

Interesting there hasn't been more word regarding this. I guess it's not too surprising though, as the 7-speed is a JATCO unit and historically JATCO transmissions tend to be somewhat weak and fragile. They don't have a great reliability history.

I drove a company-leased Patrol in Abu Dhabi/Dubai a lot of years ago, and although it was very "utilitarian", not to say "agricultural" in appearance, it was comfortable, dead reliable, and would go just about anywhere you pointed it. For two months I made customer calls, even delivered a couple of big loads of oilfield parts in the mid-to-large-size wagon. My impressions were of a highly refined LR with a far better paint job, nicer seats, and a relatively powerful engine. It was no speed merchant, as befits something with the aerodynamics of an outhouse, but it was a VERY nice ride.

I was extremely disappointed it was never imported to the US, and there were no plans for Nissan to do so.
