The R56 is about 2 inches longer than the R53, but actually about 20 pounds lighter. Still go kart-like, but a more substantial go kart. Agree on trying both though, they are noticably different even if they are variations on the same theme. Interesting that you found it a pain to mod, most people I know are able to get decent power and reliability. Mods (chips, tuning) for the Turbo are just coming out.
As for the pain to mod, I was refering to actually turning wrenches on them, and as compared to Japanese cars. It's as if these cars were designed to be difficult to work on. But this is typical with most European cars as compared to their Japanese counterparts.
The good news is that the aftermarket is plentiful for MINIs and you can get just about anything you like for them. This is another typical trait of Euro cars.

Wife has one, we have it lowered on Stechs, intake, full sways. Drives fast and has a lot of power for a little car, love that supercharger. Fast and nimble like driving a go cart.
But it does rattle and creak a lot.
