There is no absolute safety, especially at sporting events. Fans have been killed by flying hockey pucks and baseballs, as well as parts from cars, trucks and motorcycles that are involved in crashes. Unless they operate in a caged environment there is always a risk.

Tragic, but motor sports especially have dangers to fans.

I watched this race on Sunday, initially coming off near the starting line the tire had so much momentum that after reaching the pit area (off to the side of the drag strip near the end) it was still bouncing 20 feet in the air, thankfully more were not hurt or killed, time for tethers.
