* Overall GM sales up 11.5 percent, core retail up 7 pct

Stocks | Cyclical Consumer Goods

* GM estimates winter storms cut overall sales by 5 pct

* Fleet sales more than double, gain almost 115 pct

DETROIT, March 2 (Reuters) - General Motors Co [GM.UL] on Tuesday posted a nearly 12 percent gain in U.S. February sales, boosted by a doubling in sales to fleet operators and relatively strong demand for newer crossovers like the Chevy Equinox.

Retail sales for GM's core brands -- Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac brands -- were up 7 percent from a year earlier when U.S. auto sales were near the bottom of a punishing slump and the automaker was sliding toward bankruptcy.

The February result marked the fifth consecutive month that GM's four remaining brands posted a retail sales gain, but the automaker said a still-weak market for housing and jobs represented a threat to recovery for the auto industry.

But industry-wide sales for February proved weaker than most analysts had expected in projecting a limited recovery in 2010 starting in the first quarter.

Mike DiGiovanni, GM's sales analyst, said the automaker believed that winter storms across the United States had reduced industry-wide sales by about 5 percent in February.

In addition, he said that the ongoing recalls at Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) had put a damper on overall auto sales in February.

DiGiovanni said GM still believed that the U.S. economy was on track for a gradual recovery with annual sales expected to hit a range of 11.5 million to 12 million vehicles in 2010.

That would be up from an estimated total of 10.7 million in February, including medium-duty work trucks, he said.

"We see the primary risks in housing and employment," DiGiovanni said on a conference call to discuss the sales results. He called U.S. consumer confidence "tepid."

Overall sales for GM's mainstay brands -- Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac -- were up 32 percent.

Fleet sales to operators including rental car agencies more than doubled from a year earlier, increasing almost 115 percent.

Sales of the brands GM has dropped through its U.S. government funded restructuring -- Hummer, Pontiac, Saab and Saturn -- were down 86 percent as dealers sold off remaining inventory.

Those four brands GM has closed or sold off now represent just over 2 percent of the automaker's total U.S. sales.

GM pointed to success in reducing costly sales incentives and increasing pricing, a key to its strategy of becoming profitable at smaller sales levels.

The automaker said its average transaction price was up $4,000 in February compared to a year earlier. At the same time, GM reduced sales incentives, which were just $200 above the industry average in February, executives said.

GM's Domestic Sales Climb 12%

General Motors Co. reported a 12% increase in February domestic sales, as Toyota Motor Corp. said it is offering an "aggressive" incentive program for March to try to lure buyers back to its U.S. showrooms.

February was the first full month that rival auto makers were able to take advantage of Toyota's image crisis after the Japanese auto maker recalled 8.5 million cars world-wide because of safety problems.

GM said it sold 141,951 vehicles in the U.S. last month, compared with 127,296 a year earlier. There were 24 selling days in both periods.

February auto sales will be announced today, and while GM and Toyota have traditionally held the top spots, Ford may pull ahead of GM, Neal Boudette reports on the New Hub panel.

The four brands that GM will keep after its streamlining reported a 32% rise amid strength for crossover vehicles and cars. Among those brands, Buick posted a 47% sales surge. Cadillac and Chevrolet reported 32% increases, while GMC had 26% growth. GM said combined retail sales for the quartet rose 7%, marking the fifth-straight month of such gains.

U.S. inventories as of Sunday totaled 420,000, up 7.7% from a month earlier but slightly more than half the prior-year level.

The latest data come as GM on Tuesday is expected to announce a shakeup of its sales and marketing operations in a bid to jump-start growth and market-share gains in North America, a person familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal. The likely changes were first reported by Automotive News.

Other auto makers are to release their February sales data later Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a Toyota representative said in an email to dealers in the Chicago region that the March incentive program is "the most aggressive incentive program in our history," but acknowledged that the cash offers would be reduced in favor of low-rate financing.

The Japanese auto maker is offering free financing for five years on eight 2010 model-year vehicles, cash back of between $500 to $3,000 on nine models and a two-year free maintenance offer for returning customers, according to a document provided to a dealer. The offers could vary depending on the region of the U.S.

The offers come as Toyota executives were preparing to testify Tuesday before a third congressional committee about the company's safety problems. Toyota's sales last month were expected to fall at least 10% from a year earlier.

The lumping of any car with into any category doesn't really matter - most folks come here for the numbers and we all appreciate all the work that goes into that.
The TSX has never been in the same category. It has NEVER been in a comparison vs the IS or 3 series anywhere. The TSX debuted with a 27k or so price tag to the 3/IS 30k price tag and it was a FWD/I-4 car vs RWD/I-6. It is a rebadged Accord, it is sub entry level.

Sure it was (still is) a good car and sure some people cross shopped it. It was never a direct competitor nor a threat to the 3 or IS. The TL is the car that has always been in the price range and comparisons vs the 3/IS (even if the size is larger, just like a CTS or G35/37)/.

The 3 series and IS have;
I-6/V-6
V-8
coupes
convertibles
M/F
M sport/F sport OEM parts
RWD
AWD

The TSX is only a sedan, only FWD much cheaper in price and finally offers a V-6 option.

Apples to oranges.

Again this is no diss to it. It is a good car and owners seem to love it.

MOTOR SHOW: Peugeot Exec: German Auto Market Down 30% In Feb
http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-...atestheadlines

By David Pearson
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

GENEVA (Dow Jones)--The German automobile market plunged 30% on the year in February, partly reflecting the end of German government scrapping incentives last autumn, a senior PSA Peugeot-Citroen (UG.FR) executive said Tuesday.

Jean-Marc Gales, executive vice-president of sales, marketing and aftersales told a group of journalists at the Geneva Motor Show that March is likely to be "very weak" too. "It's not a big surprise. Everyone knew it was coming," Gales said.

Earlier Tuesday, Peugeot-Citroen Chief Executive Philippe Varin said he expects the German market to contract between 25% and 30% in 2010 as sales adjust to more natural levels after the artificial boost from incentives in 2008.

Gales said Peugeot-Citroen still aims to maintain the 6.3% German market share it had in 2008, up from 5.7% in 2008.

"But I told our dealers in February not to push sales too much to preserve profit margins," he said. "Trying to chase market share in a depressed market with deep discounts costs far too much," he said.

GM doubled fleet sales? not a good sign at all, and they evidently didn't benefit from Toyota's recall as some had expected...

Default Kia Motors America Announces Best February Sales Ever

All-New 2011 Sorento CUV is Kia's Best-Selling Vehicle for the Second Consecutive Month

IRVINE, Calif., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced the brand's best February sales ever of 24,052 units, a 9-percent increase over the same period last year and 2.3-percent over the previous February sales record of 23,512 set in 2007. February sales were led for the second consecutive month by the all-new 2011 Sorento CUV, which hit dealerships nationwide in early January and is the brand's first U.S.-built vehicle(1). Sorento posted sales of 8,207 units, an 11-percent increase over January.

"In addition to being our best-selling vehicle for the second month in a row, the all-new Sorento also is bringing new, more affluent customers into our showrooms and indicates the growing interest in the Kia brand," said B.M. Ahn, group president and CEO of KMA and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG). "Having recently celebrated the grand opening of Kia's first U.S.-based manufacturing plant in West Point, Georgia, Sorento's strong performance validates the investments Kia has made in the U.S. market as more and more consumers are recognizing our commitment to quality, safety, design, value and technology."

Kia Motors is in the midst of a dramatic, design-led transformation, which has been delivering dynamically styled vehicles in several important segments at exactly the right time, contributing to the brand's continued gains in U.S. market share. The launch of the all-new 2011 Sorento CUV, the official vehicle of the NBA and the first vehicle to be built at the company's first U.S.-based manufacturing facilities in West Point, Georgia, builds on the momentum established in 2009 with the introduction of the Soul urban passenger vehicle and the Forte compact sedan and two-door Forte Koup.

Higher sales for every brand and in every product category propelled Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) to a 43 percent sales increase in February versus a year ago. Compared with January, Ford's February sales are up 22 percent.

"The strength of our new products and Ford's leadership in quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value are resonating with customers," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing Sales and Service. "The good news is we have even more new products and fuel-efficient powertrains coming this year, and we expect our progress to continue."

February sales were higher throughout Ford's line-up. Cars were up 54 percent versus a year ago, utilities were up 39 percent, and trucks were up 36 percent. Among brands, Ford sales were up 46 percent, Lincoln sales were up 19 percent, and Mercury sales were up 24 percent.

Year to date through February, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 250,050, up 34 percent versus a year ago.

Ford said it remains committed to delivering the freshest line-up of new products in the U.S. industry. New or significantly upgraded vehicles this year include the Ford Fiesta, Focus, Edge and Edge Sport, Explorer, F-Series Super Duty, Transit Connect Electric, Lincoln MKX and an all-new small car for Mercury.

In addition, the company is introducing nine new or upgraded fuel-efficient engines and six new transmissions this year. They include the new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, new Mustang V-6 and V-8, new Super Duty 6.7-liter diesel and 6.2-liter gasoline engines.

"This is the most ambitious powertrain upgrade ever undertaken by Ford," said Czubay. "Our goal is to provide our customers with industry-leading fuel economy and performance – and more reasons to shop Ford and buy Ford."

March 1 (Bloomberg) -- Volkswagen AG’s U.S. sales for its namesake brand increased more than 25 percent last month, the automaker’s chief operating officer for the market said.

The brand benefited from demand for the CC car, diesel- powered Jetta sedan and Golf hatchback, said Mark Barnes, the Volkswagen Group of America executive, in an interview today. That increase follows a 41 percent jump in January.

Volkwagen, Europe’s largest carmaker, this year is building toward a goal of boosting U.S. sales to 400,000 in 2012. The Wolfsburg, Germany-based company sold 213,454 vehicles in the market last year, a 4.3 percent decline as the industrywide total tumbled 21 percent.

“Some of it is new products, but a lot of it is they are marketing aggressively,” said Jim Hall, an analyst at 2953 Analytics in Birmingham, Michigan. “They have to continue to have this level of marketing through the life cycle of the products.”

TrueCar.com, a research firm based in Santa Monica, California, estimated that Volkswagen-brand sales in February rose 39 percent from a year earlier. Automakers report the monthly figures tomorrow.

Barnes said that “we are certainly on pace” for the 2012 target.

Volkswagen aims to sell 1 million vehicles annually in the U.S. by 2018, with its Audi luxury division accounting for 20 percent of that. Audi sales in 2009 totaled 82,716. Volkswagen’s U.S. unit is based in Herndon, Virginia.

Sales may get a boost in September from the introduction of a successor to the current Jetta, the brand’s best-selling model, Barnes said. Volkswagen plans to reduce the price of the new model from the current version, Tim Ellis, the U.S. unit’s vice president of marketing, said in January.
