The benefits of AWD are not just restricted to snow and ice. AWD helps a lot in rain, sand, stability in crosswinds, more-even tire wear between front and rear.....a number of factors. But, I agree with you that, in general, it is not as important to have it in Houston as in places farther north.

I'm not sure what you mean by "outdated", but, if you mean its squarish, conservative design (which the Mini Cooper, of course, also has), there sure is nothing wrong with that. Not only is that a long-standing GTI tradition, as the first ones were almost 30 years ago, but there are a number of benefits to that design; space-efficiency, of course, being one of them. So, in that sense, just as with its cousin the VW Beetle, there is probably no such thing as a "outdated" GTI.
