Default Mazda to add brake over ride systems to all future models

According to a recent report, Mazda will be installing brake override systems on all of its models in the near future. Whenever that happens, the brake will automatically get priority over the accelerator in a situation where both of them are simultaneously depressed. Nissan already has such a system installed on most of its cars, and Toyota has already pledged to do so. As far as Japan goes that leaves companies like Honda, Mitsubishi, Subaru and Suzuki in the "Undecided" column.

A Mazda spokesman said the company wasn't aware of any unintended acceleration issues with its vehicles anywhere in the world that would necessitate such a system. This really looks to be a proactive move, since the estimated $50-per-car cost of the brake override will be much less hurtful than having to recall an untold numbers of cars... and you'll be paying for it, anyway. The company doesn't have details yet on the specifics of implementation, but it will eventually apply to every car the company sells.

How can this cost $50?

All the hardware and wiring is there, only the software is different.

Unless they are doing something exotic, this should be free. You just code the ECU to give the brake input priority. That's it.

Anyone have any details on this?

With the current situation with Toyota, I'm pretty sure ALL automakers will be adding the feature as standard equipment immediately...

You can still left foot brake, heel & toe, etc. if they program it right. I do it everyday in my GTI with this brake override feature. No problem at all.

The override is not instant. It takes a few seconds of both inputs to kick in. So your advanced driving techniques are safe, provided the newly adopted systems operate in the same delayed manner.

And as I said before, manual transmission cars don't even need this feature. Neutral is everywhere (and routine) on a manual-shift car, plus the experience is more driver-involved than an automatic transmission car where it's easy to be on your own planet, isolated from the machine.

This is welcome news. I was worried about the same thing.

Thanks CleanSC, good news. Now I just get to fear the death of the manual transmission...

too bad people will still find a way to complain about SUA even after a fix like this. Goes to show the driver is by far the weakest link in the overall function of a vehicle.

Definitely, we need to impose stricter drivers training before issuing licenses and continue to monitor abilities through their years.
