Good news, bad news.... "bullet-proof" Sonata breaks down

On the GS, the throttle plate is controlled through a motor. When the TPS fails, the electrical portion doesn't work anymore, so all you have left is a throttle cable. When you floor the pedal, the throttle plate will open ever so slightly so you can still drive around at a very low speed.

Something like that should (normally) not have ocurred with no warning.

The Limp-Mode, with most modern torque-converter automatics, usually means a locked second-gear, with no shifting. That generally allows stops/starts and relatively slow travel to the nearest repair shop....though starting in second gear can put some strain on the engine, especially starting on an uphill. This 2nd-gear limp-mode, of course, is not possible on non-torque converter automatics and automanuals like SMTs and DSGs, because they have no torque converter that allows internal slippage at a stop.

I wonder if you would have disconnected the battery for 5 mins if it would have done anything to reset the sensor?
anyway....knock on wood....I haven't been stranded since my high school days in a POS Chrysler that wouldn't start.

Thankfully it was just a simple Throttle Sensor. Those things go bad all the time on most. Easy fix but is inconvenient. I've only been stranded 3 times in various cars. 1st was a 79 Ford Mustang that blew a water hose. 2nd was Lexus SC400 that had the Fuel Pump ECU fail. 3rd was E46 BMW with a bad fuel pump. Getting stranded sucks, but at least you were able to limp back to the repair shot.
