I've been averaging around 38 mpg in city driving from home to work and back but given that these are short trips I'd say the mileage rating is pretty unreliable. I've not taken any long trips with the car yet except for that time when my wife and I visited the Chiemsee in Bavaria. It was a two and a half hour trip with an average speed of about 130 kph (88 mph) on the autobahn in ice cold conditions, to. According to the trip computer and my own calculations, the 118d achieved an impressive 43 mpg (5.5 L / 100 km). Not bad at all.
And the little engine is fun to. It's not an extremely fast car but it is agile, responsive and "quick".
I expect the fuel economy to improve in the summer, when the weather is warmer.

I've always sort of liked the 1-series' looks. I know it's definitely not for everyone, but I'm more of a fan than a detractor of the car. Seems like a nice option, but as mentioned countless times the price seems to be a pretty big negative.
FWIW, I have a customer who drove up to my shop with a 135i. I asked him how he liked it and he said that he loved it--because it was fast. He also has an M5, but said that it's too heavy and not as much fun to drive as the 1.

Edmunds insideline had one for a 12 month road test: http://blogs.insideline.com/roadtest...s/2008BMW135i/
I like how it looks, but it depends on how you option it really.

I like it. I'd probably get the 128 just for the reliability compared to the 135.
I also like the last gen Z4 M coupe.
The 3 series is just too big for my taste.
btw, I know two guys, one is 6'10", the other 6'11", and they both fit inside the 1 coupe.

I'm going to have to give this a
I personally hate the design of this car and wouldn't purchase this car. And at the it's price... Yeah right... I don't care about it's speed quite frankly, as I could get other cars to go fast and still be lighter, less expensive, and with better looks.
Just my .02

Yes, it's a great little car from a purely-driving point of view (in good weather), but like I've said before......the U.S.-market, American-spec versions have several shortcomings.
First, the base price is too high (and close to the 3-series), because of the lack of a lower-powered 4-cylinder (its two in-line sixes are shared with the 3-series). Second, there's no wagon/liftback version...you're stuck with either coupe or ragtop. Third, there's no sedan version (although there probably wouldn't be much back-seat room if there were). Fourth, there's no xi-AWD version, like with virtually every other BMW series.
