Nice. It seems as though everyone else will soon be playing catchup to Ford and GM. Ford's Fiesta and Focus will set new standards this coming year with highway ratings of 40 mpg with their high 6 speed transmissions (a class first).
We can no longer assume Toyota and Honda the efficiency benchmarks. Toyota and Honda needs to follow suit with 6 speeds to compete for highway numbers.
Of course, I wouldn't call this that amazing. After all, the 6.2L 430hp V8 Corvette gets 26mpg highway. That's what a high 6th gear and bullet-like aerodynamics will do.

1 MPG....wouldnt call that quite a bit less.
Chances are you will get better with the MT if you care to. Do some short shifts, which obviously isn't ideal for quick acceleration, but is more valuable to saving fuel than any automatic I've driven. No that's not fair. Any non hybrid auto that I have driven.

The highway fuel economy is surely impressive, but again part of that is thanks to gearing.
The 2011 Avalon is supposed to get 20/29 EPA fuel economy. Slightly better city economy than 2011 Mustang V6, but slightly worse highway economy, so roughly equal.
While the Avalon does have 29 HP less, it's likely going to weigh more than the Mustang V6.

Yeah, it's not great, but it is an improvement. I am surprised that we aren't seeing more engine start-stop technology since supposedly it really does help save fuel.

I would expect more automakers to be using it. Toyota already uses for example stop-start tech on several non-hybrid models in Japan and Europe. I would expect them to bring this tech to next-gen North American models.

I'd love to see start-stop on all the next gen Lexus vehicles.

Its with the auto only I think. Still I am glad this thread was started b/c I think it shows how silly some I-4s are in regards to economy and how many small cars just are not as efficient as they need to be.
Big Kudos to Ford here with this new engine. Yet it STILL has 300hp.
Now that is "Advance"

Your real life is going to be very different between v6 and 4cly.
And it seems a lot of latest cars are being optimized for latest EPA tests, and real life figures are never as impressive.

a. it is freaking useless in real life
b. EPA fuel tests do not favour it, so manufacturers can not claim anything on EPA official numbers.
Why is it useless in real life? Because in most cases, it will not always shut down your car at traffic stop (and thats only where it will stop it btw). If you want AC on, your car will never "stop".
You need much bigger battery if you want AC to work, basically you need mild-hybrid solution.

Not likely, today modern auto trannys short-shift more consistently than most drivers, in the interest of max fuel economy.
