Lexus reported passenger car sales of 10,060 units in March, up 34.1 percent over the year-ago month. Lexus passenger car sales were led by the recently revised ES 350 entry luxury sedan which posted sales of 3,860 units, up 15.1 percent over the same time last year.
The IS luxury sports sedan reported combined sales of 3,137 units, up 24 percent over March 2009. The HS 250h luxury hybrid sedan recorded March sales of 1,494 units.
Lexus light trucks recorded sales of 10,159 units, up 39 percent over last March. Lexus sales were led by the RX, which posted combined March sales of 8,060 units, up 25.5 percent over the year-ago month. The all-new GX mid-size luxury utility vehicle reported sales of 1,785 units.

As for Lexus Canada. I heard they took a hit for the first time ever. Actually selling less than the previous March.

Wow, March was some month.
No wonder I'm seeing a lot of new cars around here.
I was surprised by the strength of the 3-series, IS, and C-class sales numbers.
Also interesting how the C-class outsells the recently redesigned E-class now.

Looking further into the data, given that the entire market was up, Kia and Hyundai sales actually were not that great once you exclude two or three models.
With the exception of the Sonata and Santa Fe, Hyundai sales were not that good. Elantra sales are struggling, and Tuscon sales are still quite low.
Kia sales are nothing special, with the exception of the new Sorento.
Total fail for Chrysler this month. Fiat should sell their stake, and Chrysler should finally die.
Not a good month for Mazda either, happy to see they are struggling. They deserve to fail with their ridiculous "happy face fish" styling.

There's some interesting data with the premium and luxury SUVs. RX by volume is up 30.5%, which is quite good. Take a look at the gains from the competition whether by size or cost. MDX is up 47.7% by volume. The SRX is up 550.2%. The Enclave is up 41.5%. The X5 managed 26.7% increase. The Q5 (smaller sized but same price range) is up 55.5%. The M class is up 28.6% while the even larger and pricier GL Class is up 68.2%.

Some thoughts.
I am stunned the A5 coupe outsold the G37 coupe. I honestly never thought that would happen. Both sell very well for 2 doors.
The Sonata had a big month but so did the Altima, Accord, Camry.
Crosstour is not on track to hit its 40k a year target
Why does Acura keep the RSX on the sales sheet when it was discontinued years ago?
The ZDX is a fail.
The X6 is a fail yet its more expensive and outsells the ZDX.
The 3 series is old and so is the 5 series and they had big months.
I like the new 7 but it continues to struggle some months. Its the newest but does not sell like it.
The C class is just a tremendous hit. Shows there are A LOT of people that don't care about being the fastest or having the best MPG.
The GLK is like the C-class. Not class leading but damn people want a baby Benz! The sales are amazing.
The RX domination is not even funny anymore.
The GX outsold the HS. Both are new and the GX is more expensive. Shows people still want their SUVs.
The GS held steady.
Buick is no joke. When the Regal gets here they will hit 15k a month easy.
More than 1/2 of Infiniti sales are from the G37. They better not screw up the next model.
The new M37/56 sold okay and if you shop around, you can get huge discounts already as dealers are dying for sales.
The FX and EX are huge flops.
The Panamera had a great month. That is a lot of sales for a pricey vehicle.

The above total numbers for MB have a caveat--they include the Sprinter vans. They don't really count in the luxury market, and the totals used in this article and in the earlier tier 1 comparo post reflect that:

Lexus Tops Mercedes in U.S. Luxury-Auto Sales in March, Quarter

April 2 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus increased its U.S. sales 42 percent in March to finish the first quarter with the luxury-vehicle lead over Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz.
Lexus sold 20,219 cars and sport-utility vehicles last month and 49,523 for the quarter, according to a statement today. Mercedes reported sales of 19,637 for March, a 26 percent increase from a year earlier, and 49,229 for the quarter.
Toyota’s division has been the top seller of luxury vehicles in the U.S. on an annual basis for 10 years in a row. Mercedes, helped by its revamped E-Class sedan, had moved ahead of Lexus and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG through 2010’s first two months. The BMW brand posted a 3.1 percent increase in March to 18,060 and finished the quarter at 46,323.
“The luxury market is doing pretty well,” said Jessica Caldwell, a senior analyst at Edmunds.com, a Santa Monica, California-based provider of industry data. “We assumed when times were tough that luxury sales would fall. It has held its share of the market.”
Lexus benefited from a tripling of sales of its redesigned GX mid-size SUV, as well as increases of 30 percent for the RX sport-utility vehicle and 29 percent for the IS car, according to the statement from Toyota City, Japan-based Toyota.
At Mercedes, sales of the E-Class more than doubled while the C-Class, its highest-volume model, rose 20 percent, the unit of Stuttgart, Germany-based Daimler said in a statement.
‘Not Holding Back’
Mercedes expects more increases from the E-Class as it adds a convertible version in May and a diesel E-350 in October, said Ernst Lieb, chief executive officer of the brand’s U.S. unit.
“We’re not holding back,” he said. “We have newer products than some of our competitors. We’re going after whatever we can get.”
BMW intends to pass Lexus for the No. 1 rank in the U.S. by 2012 on the strength of new models, Jim O’Donnell, president of the Munich-based company’s North American unit, said yesterday.
In March, BMW spent an average of $4,797 a vehicle on incentives, compared with $3,527 for Mercedes and $1,778 for Lexus, according to Edmunds.com.
“BMW has a lot of good lease deals,” Caldwell said. “They’re trying to hold onto the market.”
Cadillac, the luxury brand of Detroit-based General Motors Co., reported a 42 percent increase to 11,639 for the month as sales of its redesigned SRX crossover sport-utility vehicle surged more than sixfold. Cadillac spent a per-vehicle average of $4,307 on incentives, third among luxury brands behind BMW and Ford Motor Co.’s Lincoln, according to Edmunds.com.
Lincoln sales rose 19 percent to 8,693 vehicles, Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford said in a statement.
Infiniti, Audi

My opinion of Caddy styling is less favorable than most. I feel the square-edged Escalade-derived styling is great for trucks but is a bit out of place on modern sport sedans. Yes the CTS proportions and stance are pretty nice, but the truck grill, square butt, vertical tailights look best on a SUV (I suspect the aero numbers for the CTS are not that impressive). And I'm not so sure about the reliability of any Caddy.
Note: the SRX SUV-thing seems to be selling fairly well, the styling looks pretty good on that kind of vehicle.

There were dealer incentives on this vehicles. For every HS we sold in March, we got a $300 flat. Some salespeople turned customers into HS customers when they werent even thinking about an HS when they walked into the door. Lexus is trying to make the HS a staple car in the US.

The above total numbers for MB have a caveat--they include the Sprinter vans. They don't really count in the luxury market, and the totals used in this article and in the earlier tier 1 comparo post reflect that:

Funny how in the article the president of BMW North America mentions BMW intends to beat Lexus for the #1 spot in 2012. IMHO it sounds like stereotypical German arrogance.
Does BMW expect Lexus (and Mercedes as well) to sit still and not have any new models?

In 2012, Lexus will have, at the very least, the following redesigned models:
- 4th generation GS
- 6th generation ES
- 3rd generation IS
Lexus could also likely have a 5th generation LS in 2012, although that might be in 2013.
The next-gen GS and next-gen IS are expected to have expanded model lineups as well.
