As for them being played out... I don't think they are played out, but I am pretty upset that Kias have adopted them so much faster than Toyota and Ford.

So does this mean that it's safe to say that the Mercedes E class and Porsche 911 copied Audi too as they both have LED lighting? Or how the Altezza light craze of a few years back inspired the clear lens tails of the Altima?

I don't think it's played out, but it can very easily look tacky if done wrong. The idea here is to blend in each light and make it look more like a continuous strip rather than individual bulbs. It's the bulb look that looks like cheesy Christmas lights, bar mood lighting, 1970's "MOTEL OPEN" lights, or rope lights along a walkway. To my eye, it's pretty obvious, but some manufacturers don't seem to get it.

Just because they are required does not mean all designs will be copies of each other.
Mercedes and Porsche implemented it in their own ways, while Hyundai/Kia chose the "me too" route.

Regardless, I still take fault in people here complaining about this. The only difference between the way Mercedes and Porsche use the LED compared to Audi, Hyundai and Kia is that Mercedes and Porsche didn't put the LEDs in the headlamp unit and instead put them elsewhere on the bumper. I mean, if that's the only difference we're talking about, we could say Lexus is copying Audi with the CT and LS headlamps. But no one's saying that...
(Not to mention, the new Kia Optima's LED DRL's are on the bumper, not in the headlamp. So are they being TRAILBLAZERS, LIKE PORSCHE AND MERCEDES? Or are they simply copying Mercedes and Porsche now too?)

since someone brought up the LS (and i guess the CT too? if it's the same thing as the LS), but are the ones on the LS LED DRL? they look a tad amberish compared to the other LED DRL, and then when they're off, i couldn't really tell whether there are bulbs there or not unlike the other brands where you can still see the cool LEDs. What kind of lights did Lexus put there exactly? it's been bugging me for a while haha.
