that means the unit is showing signs of wear and tear, and that it will "soon" need replacing---and you could define "soon" to be anything you'd like, but once it's showing signs of damage (like the leaks) it's not going to get any better.

I went to an independent shop recently and they at least had the courtesy to tell me which repairs should be done in what timeline to insure that I'm not landed in an expensive disaster later on.

i always thought toyota was fishy also when i bring my 07 camry in for service. i just tell them no to everything and just go for the oil change. 60k+ miles it still feels new!

Drums, like rotors, can be re-used or re-finished if they are not down to critical metal thickness in the contact area. That thickness is determined by engineers. They wear down, just like pads/rotors do. If they are below the recommended thickness, re-use is not recommend. If you doubt the shop is telling you the truth, ask to see the drums, the wear pattern, and the micrometer used to measure them.

If you're not satisfied with that dealer...go to a different one. If you're no If you're not satisfied with TOYOTA dealer, go take it to a local mechanic who are usually cheaper and get that attention that looks like you require...

You forget to give us the model,years, mileages and condition of your truck. The rear brake drum has minimum spec. if they are too thin they can not resurface and it will overheated or cracked. I will guess, your truck has over 150k with original brake shoes,now you need steering rack after all these years.

2003, Tundra 4WD, 240,000km....second set of rear shoes.

I highly doubt the steering gear will fail so early. Toyota trucks are supposed to be tough arent't they?

At the end of the day, you walked out of a dealer paying $136 + tax for a service they provided.

You choose not to use their recommendations which while may be overpriced (as are all dealers) likely will be needed at some point in the future.

Serpentine issue is way overblown since the first OPINION that you need to replace your belt doesn't hold anymore weight than the 2nd OPINION that it doesn't need to be replaced immediately.

The steering gear did not fail,but the rubber seal that was leak on your truck after 150k miles. Copy from your original post " SLIGHT LEAK).

You can drive with leaky power steering rack, just top off the fluid every once a while. The tech and the service advisor just try to cover their behind so you don't come back and complaint about the fluid leak on your garage. After 7 years and 150,000 miles or 240,000 km of driving and they only found 2, I mean 2 things wrong with your truck...
