Default Offered $17,000 for my Civic...

So my wife was at the dealer getting the oil changed and tranny fluid swapped yesterday. This older couple (Meghan said 60 years old or so) were looking at new 2010 Hybrid's. They saw our car...and they loved it. They asked my wife all kinds of questions about it, how many miles it has, etc.

Anyway, at the end of the converstation, The old man asked her If we would take $17,000 for it.

Guess what my wife said?

"Oh no, my husband is in Iraq right now, and he would KILL me if I sold his car..."

I am SO PISSED. She should have taken that, signed the car over right then, mods and all, and Walked out, went to the Lexus dealer, and slapped it down on a New/slightly used Lex.

Oh well, props to my wife I guess...some women would have sold it and taken the money and ran! But...damn...

I guess she isn't keeping up with your threads on CL. However, it's probably a smart move on her part not to pull the trigger on that without thoroughly discussing possible outcomes ahead of time. It's not like she could just pull out her cell phone and call you at the office. However, you could probably discuss it with her in case the opportunity arises again. She can at least get the name and number of the persons interested in the car.

An LX coupe will get 13,500 through a private seller...but not with that mileage.

He is upside down.

I told her if it ever happens again to do it. She has full POA, so she can do all of that stuff. But in a way I am glad she didnt. Nice to know she wouldnt do it without talking to me first.

You could have bought a Ducati with that kind of money!

For a used one, you bet. 17K, under some conditions, will buy a NEW Civic. DX models start under 16K.

But I'm not sure, though, that that offer would have actually held up if they sat down to serious negotiation. People often say (or ask) things in idle conversation that they don't really mean if push comes to shove. So, Josh, I wouldn't lose too much sleep over that......you've probably got too many other things to concern yourself with in Iraq.

I, for example, can't count all of the people who've come to me and said "Mike, I think I want a new car....what's your advice?", and then, when faced with the prospect of actually SPENDING that money, decide to change their minds. Heck, I did it myself last year when I considered a new, special-edition Challenger R/T and then decided, for several reasons, it wasn't a wise purchase.

Aside from wheels, I don't know how much money you have in it but it's not worth $17,000 (especially with the new found potential engine block issues).

Still, your wife was right not to go ahead without you.
