Post Report: BMW M3 Sedan may not live to see another generation (again)

Between the emergence of the M3 GTS and the Competition Package – to say nothing of the new 335is – there's been plenty of news for fans of BMW's performance-oriented 3 Series. Unfortunately, not all of it is good, as reports indicate that the Bavarian automaker is looking to discontinue the four-door M3 sedan.

Although the current M3 sedan looks poised to continue through to the end of its current lifecycle, sources suggest that the next-gen M3 will remain a two-door (coupe and convertible) affair only. The reason has apparently been cited as lagging sales for the V8 super-sedan, which was highly demanded by American buyers in the previous generation but has failed to live up to its potential in the marketplace. So if you've been eying that M3 sedan on the local dealer's lot but were waiting to see what the next model would bring, now may be the time, hombre.

I wouldn't be surprised. The current-gen M3 sedan has been a fail compared to the previous generation. The current-gen simply looks too boring, and not as good as the M3 coupe.

I believe there was a discussion on CL before on how the IS-F was outselling the M3 sedan.

Could it be that the 335 has too much power? I think you could make the same argument for alot of vehicles. The GS460 get you to 60 MPH .3 seconds faster than the GS350 and uses more gas to do it. Where is the need?

I think the M3 sedan looks great. Sucks if they discontinue it

LOL...The same was said about the V12 in the 7 series and BMW shocked the critics with a twin turbo V12. Expect the unexpected from BMW.

There will be an M3 sedan.

I like the M3 sedan much more than the coupe; I was thinking about one as a "next car" sometime in 2011 maybe. I prefer the E90 over the E92/93 in general though.

I hope production of a M3 continues beyond the current generation...

I wasn't a fan in pics but in person it looks butch and tough....Overall this design I am not head over heels over but I would hope the sedan continues as an option.

I hate the looks of 3 series sedan, M or not. The coupe is another story

I certainly wont miss this generation 3-series sedan. Car looks awkward in sedan form and worse in M3 IMO.

I personally think that it did not offer enough for people. Few people want the power of the M3 with the utility of a sedan(limited utility in the 3). I knew 5 people who considered both, 2 just got the coupe, the others got used M5's.

Sorry M3 sedan, you're fired.

but the m3 coupe sales have been very decent by comparison, which is also offered in 335 configuration

this would be a pretty bold move by bmw to cut the whole m3 sedan. i will be surprised. to me i think the problem is not about m3 sedan demand, it's about the e90 styling design, especially in the m3 form it just doesn't look right to me
