I had an 86 civic with a 4 speed like that and my Dad had an 81 civic back in the day. I cant believe our family would shoe horn into that little car. They were die hard cars that just never ever ever broke down

Nowadays when a couple has a newborn, they feel it's necessary to get a Chevy Tahoe or a Toyota Sequoia

I wouldn't doubt it. I mean, Civics nowadays have leather and navi! We coudn't say that 10 years ago.

Back then though we could fit as much people in the car that would fit with the baby on someones lap up front. Today, you put one rear facing car seat in the back and it pretty much takes up one and a half of the rear seat.

So the Civic once came with wood trim. hehe
One thing that didn't change for decades was Honda's choice of numerals on the guages.

Hey, that's a Hendrick dealership you're at!

Old Hondas are a rarity - but there's a red 2nd Civic S hatch that roams my town. And I still see older Accords and Civics making their rounds.

It's been a long time since I saw a choke **** in a passenger car. I retrofitted a couple into some of my first cars and trucks because many early "automatic" chokes were such a total mess. JC Whitney probably made a fortune from selling the "kit" that consisted of the ****, a long push-pull wire, and a bracket. Installation time, 20 minutes, including drilling holes in your dash and firewall.

On the upside they were dead reliable; you knew your choke was on or off, or somewhere in between. The downside was forgetting to open the choke after a minute or two of driving - it cost you gas big time. Of course, back when gas was under 20¢ per gallon, it might not have been so bad . . . except minimum wage was 90¢ per hour. I think my last vehicle with a factory manual choke was a '72 International Travelall (a proto-SUV) - and yes, it worked well on the big 402 CID V8.

Today, EFI and your ECM manage the fuel-air mix with uncanny accuracy - without the driver's knowledge, let alone input. You never have to worry about the embarrassing lack of performance off the line at the stoplight grand prix just because you left the choke on, but neither can you roll up on a full five grand redline in second gear and yank the choke just as you lift the throttle to produce some pretty spectacular backfires and great gouts of flame shooting from your side pipes. Ah, progress . . . .

Now let's talk about manual spark advance and carburetor heat . . .
