But we shouldn't lose sight of the biggest motivator for car makers to implement advanced transmissions (such as the 8 speed example given), it's simply gas mileage, no matter what other marketing hype is given.
Good points. There is also marketing leverage to be gained by offering/advertising 8 speed trans.

Exactly, because the performance advantage is real even if not huge. But the gas mileage gain is too important for major automakers to pass up, they are looking for every technology available that doesn't degrade performance (and in this case enhances performance).

In short the automakers application of 6/7/8 speed trannys have nothing to do with autobahn speeds. In fact most 6 speed tranny cars will hit top speed in 5th gear, most 7 speed tranny cars will hit top speed in 5th or 6th gear, etc., etc.

As Meowcat has pointed out the multispeed autos allow tall overdrive top gear (for max fuel economy) combined with close ratios for smooth, responsive high performance accleration, win/win.

btw - Everyday the 8 speed car is driven normally and legally at speeds over 50mph, all 8 speeds will be used.
No different than my 7 speed Mercedes or 6 speed Lexus, all gears are used in normal/legal/moderate daily driving everyday.
