April 2010 Monthly Auto Sales Thread
Thanks to all the CL members who are bringing the various data and info and to those that help compile it. Please give credit where credit is due!
The sales chart is for informational purposes only, some vehicles blend classes/prices. Cars are put where they are priced first as that is the determining factor when buying a car, not size. Thanks!

GM posts 7% gain in monthly U.S. sales
Staff and wire reports
Automotive News -- May 3, 2010 - 11:08 am ET
UPDATED: 5/3/10 11:19 a.m. ET
DETROIT -- General Motors Co.'s U.S. light-vehicle sales rose 7 percent in April, as industry sales rates continued to stabilize after last year's 27-year lows.
GM's four continuing brands -- Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac -- posted an increase of 20 percent. GM is winding down Hummer, Pontiac and Saturn and has sold Saab.
Industrywide deliveries in April may have risen to an annualized rate of 11.4 million light vehicles, the average of eight analysts' estimates compiled by Bloomberg, compared with a year earlier.
The yearly rate of domestic sales in April may be less than the 11.7 million seasonally adjusted annualized pace in March, when Toyota Motor Corp. offered its biggest incentives to counter global recalls, spurring competitors to add discounts.
“The automotive industry is in full-blown recovery,” said Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends and insight for TrueCar.com. “Toyota's generous incentives in April continue to bring consumers back into dealerships; however, the impact of its incentive programs in the marketplace appears to have diminished slightly in April.”
GM's results matched analysts' forecast of a 7 percent increase. Ford Motor Co. may report a jump of 28 percent when its results are announced around noon EDT. Chrysler's sales may have climbed 15 percent, six projections show.
Chrysler's last double-digit increase was 27 percent in July 2005, when the automaker was part of DaimlerChrysler AG.
Asia-based automakers also benefited from incentives. Toyota sales may have risen 34 percent, according to the average of five analysts. The automaker extended the no-interest loans and discount leases it offered in April, and competitors followed.
Honda Motor Co. may say sales rose 15 percent, the average of four analysts, while Nissan Motor Co. may have a 57 percent gain. Hyundai Motor Co. may increase 35 percent, according to Edmunds.com.
“Honda sales in April got a boost from the uncharacteristically large offers it made available to prospective buyers, including zero-percent financing,” said Brian Johnson, a Barclays Capital analyst in Chicago.
Manufacturers, dealers and investors use the annualized rate to account for seasonal buying patterns when comparing monthly totals. The average estimate for an industry sales pace of 11.4 million vehicles would compare with the 9.5 million of a year earlier, after the industry experienced the lowest U.S. demand in almost 30 years.
Consumer confidence
Automakers were buoyed by consumer confidence that rose in April to its highest since September 2008, as measured by the Conference Board's monthly index.
“U.S. industry sales of light vehicles appear to have slowed down in April,” Johnson said in an April 28 note. “The initial boost from the large incentives offered since March by manufacturers across the board tapered off,” he said. In addition, automakers likely sold fewer cars to fleet customers.
Toyota began offering incentives on March 2 such as subsidized leases after worldwide recalls of more than 8 million vehicles to fix defects linked to unintended acceleration and to adjust brakes. The company probably spent an average $2,416 on incentives on each vehicle last month, according to TrueCar.com.
The industry average is about $2,798, TrueCar.com said. Incentives are down 4 percent from March 2009, when Detroit-based GM and Chrysler boosted spending ahead of their bankruptcy filings.
John McEleney, who has a Toyota and a Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealership in Clinton, Iowa, said sales were up 30 percent at his Toyota store and increased about 20 percent among his GM brands.
“Sales were really pretty good, but not quite as good as March,” McEleney said, adding that sales may keep gaining this year. “We're seeing a lot more showroom traffic and a lot more Internet activity. People are feeling better about their jobs, too.”

MINI's long term growth prospects continue to be strong due to macro economic developments in the U.S. To prepare for this future growth, MINI's product range will double from three to six models starting in 2011 and the dealer network is being expanded to 100 exclusive stores by summer of this year with dealers investing a combined $200 million this year and last.

Porsche Results
ATLANTA - May 3, 2010: Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars, Cayenne SUVs and the Panamera Gran Turismo in the United States, today announced April sales in the U.S. of 1,747 units compared to the same period last year when it sold 1,853, a decrease of 6 percent.
Despite the overall decline, Porsche's new four-door Panamera recorded its best-ever one-month sales of 678. To date, Porsche has sold 3,410 Panamera models in the U.S. since it went on sale in October 2009.
Contributing to Porsche's sales decline in April versus last year was the anticipated and effective sell off of its 2010 Cayenne models earlier this year in preparation for the all-new, 2011 Cayenne. The new 2011 Cayenne S (V8) and Turbo models will go on sale in July, while the Cayenne and Cayenne S Hybrid models will be available this fall.
For the year, Porsche sales are still ahead of last year. Porsche's overall year-to-date sales in 2010 are 6,969 compared to the same period last year when sales were 6,778, up 3 percent.
For the month, Porsche's Approved Certified Pre-Owned vehicle sales were 713, compared to 615 for the same month last year.

Hyundai Results
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA - May 3, 2010: Hyundai Motor America today announced an all-time sales record for the month of April as early consumer response to the company's all-new Sonata and Tucson models shattered all expectations. Total sales through the first four months of 2010 also represent an all-time record for Hyundai.
In April, the company sold 44,023 vehicles, up 30 percent versus one year ago, marking the sixteenth consecutive month of year-over-year retail market share gains for Hyundai.
"Despite an overall industry increase in the level of sales to fleet accounts, we remain extremely focused on reducing our fleet mix, improving the quality of our market share, and driving more retail volume through Hyundai dealerships," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America's vice present of national sales. "Widespread acceptance of our new products and growing recognition of our brand's inherent value has also allowed us to significantly reduce incentive spending at a time when some of our top competitors were taking a different approach," Zuchowski added.
"For the second straight month, our all-new Sonata is the third-best selling mid-size car in the country in retail sales, well ahead of strong rivals such as Nissan Altima, Chevy Malibu and Ford Fusion. We're glad to see Sonata's unique combination of great design and segment-leading 35 mpg fuel economy is resonating with America's car buyers."
On a year-over-year basis, Sonata and Tucson sales increased 57 and 271 percent, respectively. Santa Fe was up 59 percent, and Genesis was up nine percent, marking the 10th consecutive month of year-over-year sales gain for Genesis.

Audi Sets April U.S. Sales Record With Second-Best Monthly Performance In Its History
-- Audi 2010 April sales increased 33% over 2009; only December 2006 provided better monthly results
-- Audi Q5 sales set a single-month record
-- A3 TDI accounts for nearly 60% of line's sales, exceeding expectations
May 3, 2010 (PR Newswire) --
HERNDON, Va., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- After the best first quarter in the brand's history, Audi today maintained its 2010 momentum with record April sales in the U.S. For the month, sales of Audi cars and SUVs increased 32.9% compared to April 2009.
The April 2010 results were buoyed by record monthly sales for the Audi Q5 and the A5 Cabriolet, and they marked the second-best U.S. sales in any month for Audi. In April 2010, Audi sold 9,319 luxury cars and SUVs. This topped the previous record, set in 2007, of 8,106 vehicles sold. The best month for Audi in the U.S. was December 2006 when sales reached 11,897 vehicles.
Audi A3 sales jumped 144% from a year earlier. That gain was largely due to strong consumer demand for the A3 TDI model, which is the reigning 2010 Green Car of the Year. Another positive product story for Audi came from sales of the A6 luxury sedan which increased 105.2% over last April.
"Consumers of luxury goods are clearly buying again," said Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen. "As these buyers return to the car market they are seeking out cars representing substance, leading-edge engineering and sophisticated styling. Those priorities are the fundamental reason Audi has set record sales in three of the past four months."
Audi A5 continues its single-month sales record streak
The Audi A5 Cabriolet's popularity continued to grow, setting a monthly sales record of 797 cars in April (including Audi S5 Cabriolet results). In April, the overall A5 model line (including S5 and A5/S5 Cabriolet sales) posted a year-over-year increase of 171.5%. Without the A5/S5 Cabriolet models (which weren't available in April 2009), sales for the A5/S5 line increased a robust 54.3% from a year earlier.
Audi TDI technology convinces consumers to go "green"
Consumers are continuing to embrace TDI clean diesel technology from Audi in extraordinary ways. The Audi A3 TDI now accounts for 58.7% of the overall A3 model mix. Overall, A3 sales rose 144%, meaning sales of the TDI models are incremental since their introduction to the U.S. market late last year. The Audi Q7 TDI SUV continues to account for 36.2% of the Q7 line, a result that's largely limited by supply of the TDI models.
Audi Q5 also achieves best-ever sales mark
Since its debut in 2009, the Q5 has become the brand's second-best performing model, trailing only the A4 lineup. Sales of the Q5 crossover vehicle reached 1,910 units in April, an increase of 60.2% from last April.
The positive sales results for Audi in the U.S. came as AUDI AG reported its operating profits globally in the first quarter rose 30% to 478 million euros (roughly $632.7 million). Double-digit growth rates in all global regions over the first three months of 2010. In the first quarter, AUDI AG reported operating revenues of 8,260 million euros (roughly $10.9 billion).
Audi CPO sales results
Audi Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales slipped due to limited supplies. Audi recorded 2,285 CPO units sold in April, off 12.2% from April 2009.

Hyundai really needs to build another plant in the U.S. Montgomery plant which currently builds new Sonata and Santa Fe SUV is operating at full capacity. Sonata making up about 70 percent of the production. they won't be able keep up with the demand whenever turbo and hybrid hit the shore. I really do think hyundai can sell 250k-300k sonata a year. they are on pace for about 200k this year. that's not bad for just selling 4 bangers.
