Va-va-vroom!
A curve-alicious French deco vehicle is now the most expensive car in the world, after reportedly selling for up to $40 million.
The 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic was bought by an unnamed "devoted connoisseur" according to the auction house Gooding & Company, which announced the jaw-dropping deal Wednesday.
The Bugatti is "one of the world's most significant and valuable automobiles that has been in a private collection and rarely seen during the past four decades," David Gooding, the auction house's president, said in a statement.
Gooding wouldn't disclose the price secured by the old owners, the family of Dr. Peter D. Williamson, a Yale neurologist, epilepsy expert and vintage car collector who died at his home in New Hampshire in June 2008. But the Wall Street Journal reported the vehicle sold to the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, Ca., for between $30 million and $40 million, citing a person familiar with the transaction.
The museum, outside of Los Angeles, didn't return calls to the News for comment.
The swooping, sleek Bugatti is one of three in a series and was unveiled at the 1935 Paris Auto Salon. Designer Ralph Lauren owns another one of the other ultra-rare cars.
The rumored price-point makes sense, said Scott Rumbold of Auto Sport Designs, a high-end vintage, classic and exotic car dealership in Huntington Station, L.I.
"It's iconic," said Rumbold, who has seen both the recently sold Bugatti and Lauren's version in person. "It has always been held up as one of the most beautiful cars ever designed and built."

I wonder if buyers have to pay sales tax on multi-million-dollar vintage/classic vehicles like that, as is normally the case with new and used cars? If so, then the state can make a real killing.

The car is indeed beautiful. A literal piece of automotive history.
They sure would. It costs about $175,000 to register an Enzo, so just imagine the price tag. For that price, I wouldn't register it, just insure it and park it. LOL.
