In Sweden this week, Wired got first-hand experience of what happens when it goes badly wrong -- and we've got the video below to prove it.
The new Volvo S60, due for release later this year, was fired out of Volvo's testing tunnel at around 30MPH, and the collision detection system should have kicked in, bringing the car automatically to a halt before hitting the truck in its path.
It didn't. Instead, the brand new car ploughed into the back of the truck in front of us, and indeed the world's press who had gathered in Sweden to see the collision detection system in action...

Worst time to go wrong, in front of the media, but meh it happens. I'm sure the kinks will be worked out by the time it goes on sale. I have high expectations for the S60. It looks great both outside and inside and they promise very good ride/handling. Hopefully it is a sales success for Volvo, they need it.

Not really surprised to see that. I've noticed that the laser adaptive cruise on my LS430 doesn't always detect those types of anti-submarine bumpers on the backs of flat trailers.

I'm assuming that's an ironic statement considering Toyota's recent troubles.
FWIW, no car company collects as much real world data on collisions between their vehicles and other moving and stationary objects as Volvo, so I'd always rate their vehicles up with the best on safety. Their Safety Centre is the most comprehensive crash laboratory in the world and all the current Fords owe their safety features to its work.
