In the 50K price range, I've always liked the Acura RL, and its superb construction/build quality. Its low sales, and low demand, could also be a good bargaining point.

If you don't like the ugly parrot-beak grille (and I don't either), a lot of Acura dealerships will either paint it body color for you, to lessen its effect, or replace it with a better-looking Honda-sourced grille.

I think we have narrowed it down to CTS-V,IS-F or Jaguar XF SC.

I suggested a 08 CLS 63 AMG,M5(hates SMG)...and also the E63 AMG....will know it next day or so.

Out of those 3 I say go with the Jaguar XF SC. Such a beautiful car.

That's a nice list. You're sure he won't be interested in an Audi?

Anyway my fav looks wise of the short list is the Jag most def, but we all know nothing can beat Lexus reliability... If reliability is of no concern, then the XF and the S6 should be tops on the lists.

Do you think AWD would be a desired feature, because I don't believe Jaguar offers that option.

Here would be what I consider:

1. 2010 Mercedes-Benz E350
2. 2010 BMW 335i sedan
3. 2010 BMW 328i sedan fully loaded
4. 2010 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro sedan

When you spend more than $40k to buy a car, buy a new car. Considering your friend came from a Range Rover, prestige/comfort/luxury must be pretty important.

For $50K he has unlimited options really, depending on what his preferences are. He can get a loaded 2008 S550 4Matic for that money. I've even seen S63 AMGs advertised for around $50K as well...
Uh, money...money would be the point unless you like losing lots of money in initial depreciation.

Ever owned a MB with 4matic? Money bomb waiting to happen

Well I personally wouldn't own a MB 4matic, but that's not the point.

The OP is asking for suggestions for a car FOR HIS FRIEND. Your and mine personal preferences matter little in this discussion. If you check out his friends current list of cars all of them are EXPENSIVE and all of the DEPRECIATE LIKE ****. Also all of them are unreliable and prone to need PRICEY REPAIRS.

IMO money is probably no object to his friend. His budget is $50K for crying out loud. We're not talking about someone who can barely afford an IS here.

So in light of all of that. Looking at the types of cars his friend wants I think the S550 would be a great choice. Not the most reliable but at least not the worst. His friend is not interested in an LS so that's out and the IS-F is probably too small. Since Lexus doesn't have a GS-F, I'm not sure if the GS line would even be on his friend's radar (you gotta admit the GS350 can't compare with an XF-SC).

Other options as others here have listed are the S6/E63/M5/745i/A8 etc etc etc

If you don't give a hoot about reliability I'd go M5 and call it a day.

Well said......some of you have suggested cars that we have never even considered to be in the same league as the ones we are loooking at...cars like the GS,someone said Avalon, another Acura RL,BMW 328i sedan?

I would see these suggestions make sense if I had said he is coming from a Toyota 4 runner...he bought his RR SC for 100K in 08 new....

Cars like the Jaguar XF SC,IS-F,M5,S550,CLS,S6,M3 Sedan are more his taste.

IS-F or CTS-V... No brainer. The Jaguar WILL let you down. Why no M3? Just wondering...

2010 BMW 535 = 47k
2010 Audi A6 = around the same
2010 MB E350 = around the same
Used Nissan GTR
2010 Ford Taurus

There are a lot of choices new and used under 50k; GL.
