According to MSN Gas Prices, a Valero (Venezuela) station over in Baytown is quoting $2.43/gal for Unleaded Regular. The reporting station is about two miles east of the Valero refinery in Pasadena. Between the two locations lies Exxon's "world's largest" refinery complex, where just outside its gates an "unbranded" station is selling UR for $2.69/gal. Go figure.

It's difficult to compare gas prices from one state to another because a large component of the price per gallon is state tax. The falling price of crude is more an economic phenomenon related to the fall of the Euro against the dollar than it is to tightening Gulf oil supplies. Watch for gas prices to begin a slow rise after Memorial Day.

thing is there's a HUGE difference in stations relatively close together....$2.49 at one shell versus $2.79 down the street...

Although Lil4X is correct that it is sometimes difficult to compare the price state-by-state because of different state tax rates, TX had traditionally been one of the cheapest states, so I'm not surprised you can get Shell in the Houston area for only $2.49. For one thing, many of the drilling wells and refineries are nearby, so there is very low transportation/shipping costs for the crude.

Of course, the cheaper you can get good Shell/Chevon gas (probably the two best brands), the better, but resist the temptation to use cheaper, cut-rate brands. We have had numerous CL threads (and discussions) on the problems that they can bring to engines.
