Car theft prevention "Clubs" available to certain Honda owners

By Seattle Times staff

With a recent spike in thefts of older Honda passenger cars, local police in South King County are giving away the auto-theft prevention tool, the Club.

The Clubs are available to owners of 1991-1998 Honda Accords and Civics. It's part of a state initiative to reduce to motor vehicle thefts.

The Washington Auto Theft Prevention Authority, created by the Legislature in 2007, funds regional auto theft prevention projects through grants. Among other things, the initiative provides for steering wheel locking devices such as The Club to the public for free.

To obtain a free device, you must provide proof that you own a 1991 through 1998 Honda passenger car and that you live within the service area of one of the local participating police agencies.

They include Covington, Des Moines, Federal Way, Kent, Maple Valley, Newcastle, Renton and Tukwila.

This offer is available while supplies last. The Clubs are available for pick up at the various police departments.

Hondas have had these issues for a while now. I remember very clearly that in high school it was well known that Hondas are so easy to jack.

I think the goal is to make it as hard as possible for someone to take your ride. If you think The Club is 100% worthless, why don't you just leave your car unlocked with the keys in the ignition while you're at it?

A club is worthless because many thieves just cut part of the steering wheel and pull it off. It's only going to slow them down, but not by much. It's definitely not making it hard for them.

My advice for older Hondas - keep them stock and get a GOOD alarm(at least a lower end 2-way DEI system) and stealth install it.

If you're really hardcore, a hidden killswitch and some DIY lockrod protectors wouldn't hurt.

The Club *is* 100% useless. It's an old idea who's time has passed. El obsoleto. Every thief, even amateurs, know how to get past them in seconds, possibly, even faster. The Club, today, stops no one.

I would agree that there's limited usefulness of the club these days but I would disagree that it it is entirely worthless. If two identical Accords/Civics are parked next to each other, one with club, one without, although the club is easily bypassed, even if the time to cut/disable the club only takes a minute or less, the thieves will always go for the easier target first.

At the least you could deter some joy riders.

As useless as the Club is, since Civics are so insanely common, I guess if there are two identical Civics beside each other, if yours has the Club the odds are in your favor.

So I guess it's a kinda ok idea?

The Club's usefulness is more along the lines of a weapon for self-defense, not a theft deterent.

It actually takes about 15 seconds or so to remove the club from any steering wheel, but either way if I were a thief and saw two 100% identical cars except one had the club, I myself might steal the one with the club just to rub it in to the owner. That extra 15 seconds it takes to remove the club would probably be worth the joke. But then again, I not a thief.
