Post Manual transmission percentages for 2009

I would have thought Nissan would have placed far above Toyota and Honda also far ahead of Toyota.

BMW 17.3% (20.5% cars+wagons, 0.4% trucks)
VW 12.7% (16.4% cars+wagons, 1.5% trucks)
Honda 7.3% (12.0% cars+wagons, 0.7% trucks)
Toyota 6.2% (7.1% cars+wagons, 5.0% trucks)
Ford 5.4% (8.8% cars+wagons, 2.2% trucks)
Hyundai 4.4% (5.6% cars+wagons, 2.1% trucks)
Nissan 4.3% (5.4% cars+wagons, 2.9% trucks)
Chrysler 4.0% (7.0% cars+wagons, 3.0% trucks)
GM 3.7% (7.3% cars+wagons, 0.7% trucks)

Interesting stats.

Anyone have any ideas on why Toyota would sell such a high percentage of manual trucks...especially when compared to the other major truck brands?

People opting for the cheapest possible option, ie a super stripped tacoma. It's common for pick ups to be sold completely bare bones.

I have the following theory why BMW has the highest percentage of manual drivers.

Automatic is optional for most BMWs, and cost about 2k.

Tacoma maybe? Tundra and is the FJ available in a manual? I think the Rav4 is too.

For 2009, the Tacoma (RWD and 4WD) and 4WD FJ Cruiser are the only ones available as manuals. '09 Tundras and RAV4s are only available as automatics.

Wow, I hadn't paid attention to how mainstream Honda had become, noting manuals in 7% range.

More than Porsche? And more than Lotus?

Although they still offer more manuals than may other automakers, even BMW seems to be moving away from them, primarily because of the rise of SMG/DSG twin-clutch automanuals. The company had recently planned to introduce some M models without traditional 3-pedal manuals, but the outcry forced them to reconsider.

I think Stig was referring to the car/brands on the list when he commented. (I didn't see Porsche or Lotus, but maybe I missed it in the long chart).

I work at a Toyota dealership, and it's down to the Tacoma. The Tacoma outsells the #2 non full-size pickup by a 2-1 margin last I paid attention, and you see a decent number of 4 cyl sticks.

FJs are available with a manual, however you're more likely to find a $100 bill just lying on a Toyota dealer's lot than a 6-speed FJ, at least here in the Northeast.

As far as cars go... the occasional Yaris or Matrix, a few Corollas, and 1 or 2 Camry sticks a year.

Last time I was at Toyota and tried to test drive a stick they had an xB and a Yaris and that was it. It's odd, and maybe this says something about the type of driver, but my local Subaru dealer stock Foresters with primarily with an MT because thats what sells for them. Which is ironic because only 4% of buyers opted for a MT XT when it was offered.

It's like anything else, there's what Car and Driver/Motor Trend/etc writes about, and then there's what actually sells

People do NOT buy Camry SE 6-speeds with leather and JBL...etc.

Acura is at 5% for the TL. With the advancements in the automatic trasmissions with paddle shifting , atc the manuals just dont make sense for performance. The automoatics are faster and more comfortable......and even your wife/girlfriends can actually drive a performance car
