I don't think that will happen this time....they can't afford to. The existing Prius, despite the Insight's superiority in road manners and interior materials, is just too far ahead of the Insight in drivetrain engineering/refinement. The Honda powertrain designers have got their work cut out for them.

Only if the next generation Insight comes out in 2011.

Sorry to tell you but Hondas time has passed. The 90s and early 2000s were their hey day. The competition has completely eclipsed them on all levels. They are down to their ultra loyal buyers as even loyal ones are moving on. Which is fine. They will stay a niche player.
And that means what? The NSX, V8 and RWD architecture was put on hold because of cost cutting due to the economic downturn. I'm not exactly happy about that, but I fail to see what that has to do with his statement. He is focused on making Honda products more competitive, specifically in gas milage.

Oh please. First of all, Honda has never been myopic regarding sales volume, we've already seen what happens to the growing pains of rapid expansion. Yet, despite that fact, Honda has done quite well for themselves, despite their sleeping on their laurels. How many Honda's were in the top 10 best selling cars of 2000? 2. How many as of 2009? 3.
Their competition has not completely eclipsed them on all levels nor are they a niche player. The Civic, Accord, Pilot, and Odyssey are all excellent products in their respective fields.

Also, if anyone actually read it, he never said that the next insight will beat the prius. The article says that the Prius (its gas milage) has been declared the target for the next insight to surpass. The article also says that Honda is reworking its hybrid system. Welcome changes if I do say so.

Current sales volume is one thing; the hearts and minds of youngsters that desire the brand is another. If a Honda is no longer a cool car for a kid, do you think that this same kid will want one when he gets older? I read some statistic (probably on here somewhere) that a large percentage of BMW owners don't even test drive the new model before they trade in their previous model. Brand loyalty is real.

Besides, Honda was always the "fun" Japanese car company. Don't see much fun in their current lineup.

That's just more unicorn p*ssy for me!

Honda has lost its way and it will be another 6-10 years before it even change the downward trend. Yes, they build reliable cars, but other companies are catching up.

The Insight was supposed to give the Prius a run for its money, but clearly we know that didn't happen. Honda has been playing catch-up to Toyota and Hyundai for the last couple car generations. Honda will have to really bank on people wanting Accords, Civics & CRV's.

Sadly, I'm not even looking forward to the new CRZ....and I love small cars.

Car enthusiasts can hit the snooze button again with any news from Honda....I'm going back to bed.

Lemme guess. It will cost $40k if they can pull it off. Take the CR-V and make it get 40 MPG and then Honda will dominate the fuel efficiency category of the small SUV.

I'm personally curious as to when they will cease and desist with wrong wheel drive (on the appropriate vehicles, of course, I don't expect a hybrid to have RWD or AWD)

Im sure they are already assuming the next Prius will get 55 and are going to try to beat or meet that number. They arent stupid to think that the Prius will remain at 50 combined.

so in other words they completely missed the point with the insight, period

the point is that it has less power, less space, and less economy than the prius. Even 2gen prius > insight

LOL @ Honda. Finally, they are in a position where they have made so many mistakes, they have to start coming clean. I think we were saying all of this five years ago. Welcome back to the real world Honda! Best thing they can do is start fresh with their styling.

Hey at least the 2010 Insight is comparable to the 2001 Prius (1st gen) which of course was being sold in Japan back in 1997. It got about 41 mpg.

So maybe in about 14 years or so, Honda will be able to compete against the 2010 Prius.
