Was watching this race when it happened. It overshadowed what was going to be a dramatic ending as the top three drivers all were facing serious fuel issues at the time.

Crazy crash though. He's lucky the tail end of the car struck the fence first or it likely would have been a different outcome.

I was watching it live when it happened. My dad ( who does not watch racing) was tripping out when he saw the car flipping in the air. These are the risks of open wheel racing

That was a horrific crash, he is very lucky he did not hit the fence with his roll bar and head for that matter. Both drivers definitely had a brush with death, just glad they both were able to walk away.

actually the driver that went airborne had to airlifted...but it was just a leg injury.

That's one of the major hazards of open-wheel racing. Spinning-tire-contact like that can cause cars to flip over or be tossed end-over-end. NASCAR vehicles, and other racing cars with fenders, have layers of protection to help prevent that.

Note: Nascar cars frequently flip too, though the flips are not started with wheel to wheel contact.

NASCAR has had more recent deaths than open wheel racing.

Cars flipping over dissipate energy while in the air.
