I think this has been a unique feature on many Citroen cars in the past. I believe the famous CX and SM had this as well. Citroen's and funky steering wheels go together.

I agree that the French have always been at the edge of quirky controls, but like most things, it just takes some getting used to.

I remember that I had to get accustomed to the foot-operated-parking-brake in my ex-C200 CDI / E230 and the blinker controls, but once you drive these (or any cars) a few times you'll quickly get used to the way they're designed.
