So no matter how the wheel turns, the hub-controls are always upright and legible, right? I don't think I've ever seen that on any car sold in the American market. Perhaps French cars ARE atoning for the awkward, quirky controls they did long ago.

I agree that the French have always been at the edge of quirky controls, but like most things, it just takes some getting used to.
I remember that I had to get accustomed to the foot-operated-parking-brake in my ex-C200 CDI / E230 and the blinker controls, but once you drive these (or any cars) a few times you'll quickly get used to the way they're designed.
