It wasn't just the commercials being bad.

I think you nailed it. In my opinion the cars were so bad I would also tune out any advertisement on TV.

Yes, unfortunately it took bankruptcy and bailouts before decisions could be made crisply at GM, belated decisions including shutting down entire crappy loss-plagued divisions like Saturn, Hummer, Pontiac.

But if GM leadership has time to waste on telling employees about what to call a Chevy, then that leadership should be considered for termination too. The challenges at Chevy and GM are far bigger than what casual name should be used by employees. But we do see the ***-covering retraction that happened later.

IMO if a car company has a nick name then they're somebody. Chevy, caddi, bimmer, benz, Ac, Lex, Lambo, Rolls, are nicknames for cars that are relevant(acura up until now). Are there nicknames for Infinti, Honda, Toyota, Buick, Subaru, Sabb,, Audi. Not really because there not as relevant.

Interesting. I can't recall any of the sales guys actually mentioning BMW.....fairly certain we both knew what dealership we were in.

Anyone at GM who was responsible for putting out the idea of getting rid of "Chevy" should really be taken out and spanked. Seriously, no one calls it Chevrolet. That just tells you how out of touch management is from reality.

I really see no problem with this. Call it whatever you want, but a corporation has to maintain their brand. Americans call it Chevy, other places may not. In an effort to maintain consistency, they are going to globally call it Chevrolet.

You see this sort of stuff all the time. For example, my company has been drilling and producing natural gas wells in what we called the Cotton Valley Lime for decades. With shale gas gaining momentum and the Haynesville Shale taking off, we have consolidated the official name of the underlying carbonate to Haynesville Lime, despite no one having ever called it that - but much of the rest of the industry did, so in order to provide a clear picture in communications for what we were referring to, we followed suit.

We still call it the Cotton Valley Lime informally, though.
