The car pic is cheaper than a sleeping pill and other legal/non-legal drugs.

Superb-looking front and rear ends, although, without actually sitting in it, I'm not sure how the drop-down rear-roofline is going to affect rear headroom.....a weak point in many of today's new cars.

But I love the front and rear ends......it looks like a CAR, not a bullet or a space-ship.

I think it's a winner for their target audience.

Probably so, I think the Jetta has been the best selling VW in the US for a while.

Well, you can see a lot of Corolla in the styling, and the Corolla's success is obvious.

Except it looks better than a Corolla, but I won't dwell on a subjective styling analysis because it wouldn't be that hard.

In the US top selling Toyota car is Camry, Corolla is 2nd best-selling car. In the US the top selling VW car is the Jetta, I expect VW is seeking to expand that model's sales volume significantly.

There's two ways they can do that. Continue the Jetta Sportwagen line (IMO, probably the most useful body style), and offer the 4Motion AWD system.........VW of America, right now, except for SUVs, stubbornly limits the 4Motion to the CC line. Granted, the Jetta sedan outsells the SportWagen here in the U.S., but it's nice for the customer to have a choice.

In Europe, BTW, it's the other way around. The Golf hatchback outsells the Jetta (sedan and Wagon) by a handy margin. The Golf, until recently, was the top-selling car on the Continent, until the Ford Fiesta recently overtook it.

Here's VW's opinion in May 2010 in line with release of US sales numbers (with mention of Sportwagen):

"Volkswagen's full line of award-winning TDI® Clean Diesel models, which includes the Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, Golf, and Touareg, again led the way among customers. The exciting and economical Jetta SportWagen TDI continued its strong performance, accounting for 86 percent of all Jetta SportWagens sold in May." (magic bullet=TDI per VW)

IMO, AWD is nice option in cars but doesn't generate sufficient volume due to pricing in the low-mid price ranges. SUV's are another story of course, with less resistance to higher prices (sold to higher income buyers that are less concerned about the pricing and the fuel inefficiency of a heavier/boxier SUV with AWD/4WD).

Looks like a pretty conservative redo, but I think it looks good IMO. I don't think they'll surpass Corolla and Civic sales with this unless their redesigns go totally south (as evidenced by the Odyssey pics, in the other thread ).

I agree they went after the Corolla. Why? They want to do what sells most and makes more money (volume). This is clearly a shift of their long-time philosophy of building sporty and dynamic-looking cars. The word "sellout" comes to mind, but you can't fault a company for wanting to make more money. This is definitely not the VW we once knew.

Those wheels will be a biatch to clean with all that German vehicle brake dust, though.

I saw two and how can it look good? It looks like a beige wall. There isn't a stylistic bone in its body. Its hard to believe this is a new car in the year 2011, looks like a 1988 model.

Its been downhill since this model

\

Can't believe they continue to use the Corolla as a styling target
